Default My first experience selling a car...

Just sold my Focus.
A month just on Forums got me nowhere, so put it on autotrader last night.
In capitals at the bottom I wrote "CONTACT ME VIA MOBILE EVENINGS AND WEEKENDS ONLY. OR CONTACT ME BY EMAIL".
Reason being I work in Cardiff Prison and cannot have a phone on me during the day. I looked at my phone after work and had 32 missed calls between 7.30am and 4.30pm. 10 of which were off the same person.
I have come to the concusion that people as a whole are idiots.

Then tonight someone came to look at it, bare in mind my Focus was the newest and the cheapest of it's kind on Auto trader by quite a bit!
A 2003 Focus LX 1.6, 93k new timing belt, recent service, new brakes, wheel bearings, steering rack etc etc but covered in dents for £850.

They turned up and complained about the fact it was covered in scratches and dents? Yet I wrote it 4 times in the add?

I then brought it upto the top of the drive where the car decided to remove itself of the entire contents of the gearbox oil all over my drive.
Still got £760 for it though

Either way, next time, I will Part-Ex my car.

Bailes.

It's only just started.
The cars gone, you've got the cash, the end, NO.

Wait till the buyer rings up saying they had to pay £2000 for a new engine and expect you to pay towards it.

It started leaking about a month ago, but then stopped. It was an odd drop now and again from between the gearbox and engine.
Moved it up the top of the drive and it was like a river

I can't really see any reason to complain, fair enough the people were a bit thick and didn't bother paying attention to the advert. But you've sold it quickly and only took 90 quid less than you wanted despite it dumping gearbox oil.

I'd say that was a pretty good result to be honest mate. I'd much rather that than some of the mongs i've dealt with in the past.

Yeah I've done well, still think people need to read an add though. Not just look at the pictures and phone.
I had my Focus just over a year, my Mums owned it since it was brand new.
Was just saying to a mate how even though I'm smug with my new 406, I'm totally gutted I've got rid of the Focus.
You know those walls you have for your kids that you mark their heights on as they grow up? The car is like one of them.
I remember the day it was bought, I remember every dent and scratch on that car. Theres 2/3 places where I've gone through with the machine polisher when I used to practice.
It's the car I used to tinker with and learned quite abit of what I know now from.

It did 75k of start/stop driving over 7 years when my Mum gave it to me. I've done 20k in one year of hard motorway driving and it always hung in there. Always got me where I wanted to go.
Not many older cars would have put up with what the Focus has.

If I could have kept it for a weekend car, I would have!

Oh the joys of selling a car, i had a 2004 Focus 1.4 on ebay, Buy It Now £1795 or Best Offer. I had a few nobs everyday sending silly pointless offers, lowest i got offered was £700.

Then Sunday i get a call for another car, asks to view it, then says can i pay the full amount by paypal. He didnt even ask how much the car was, then think of the fees paypal would take which he wouldnt cover. Thought he'd pay by paypal, drive away, complain to paypal, i get shafted. Told him to wait till Monday, go the bank, get the full amount in cash, then come see me, phone went dead.

Oh and a polish guy i sold a Bora too, came all the way from London, he rang before he came, price was agree'd several times at £700, he got here and demanded £50 back for petrol

My old man must have struck lucky by the sounds of it!

We have just sold our old focus, advertised at 895ono. Somebody rang twice about it, second time they asked the lowest price to which my dad says '£750 or it stays'.

A hour later two young lads turn up stick £750 in my dads hand and say right we will take it. They haven't even looked at it let alone drove it! The old mans forces them to have a look round it, pointing out the odd bits that are wrong then they are gone! No test drive or anything!

Wish all sales were like that!

Gavin.

I have been pretty ok over the years, the odd tit but most sifted out via the phone call and told to piss off.

I tend to make sure the car is described well, priced well, spotless and with half a tank of fuel (you be be amazed at how much this swings a deal, guess it must suggest I have not been a skinflint on it, I know when I arrive to test drive a car and find it on fumes I always wonder how tight the owner has been on other things).

Best bit when you do get a muppet is stone walling them when they are being a cock and then watching as they know they would be a tit to walk away.
