Had a mint 1990 saff Cossy with 350 bhp and thinking about buying one again soon or trying a classic impreza as I've always had fords

depends what you want from it, and what year/model you wanted.
cossies are horse and cart compared to the 10yr younger impreza, but cossie all day for me!
then you have 5 cylnder audi powered cars, S2, URS4/6, these again get my vote

To be brutally honest the Subaru is a better car. However I just don't like them so would have the Cossie.
Don't know if you've noticed but this is PassionFord so you may get a slightly biased opinion

why do everyone think inprezza motors are shit?
dickheads that smash the granny out of them all the time without REGULAR oil changes of the correct grade, no wonder they fucking go bang!
i rebuilt my fare share of impreza engines and YB`s and i have to say imprezas are cheaper to repair parts wise than shitty YB`s when using new stuff.
fuck it, but an Evo, job done!

All depends on budget.....
Ł5000 gets you a lovely 2wd saph
Ł1450 got me a proper tidy 1994 classic WRX Impreza with full history etc which I sold on a few months later for Ł2450

Depends entirely on budget, intended use and things like that.
Both are great cars if we're honest. I'd buy the Cosworth with my heart, but that's cos I'm a Ford fan. The value of the Impreza can't be ignored though. Both are just as capable as each other in reality though, despite what people will say to slag one or the other off.

A good Saph is sitting around Ł6000 these days, and for that money, you could get into a really clean STi Type R or Type RA which would school the Saph in every area apart from absolute top speed IMO.
However, for that money, these days you can get hold of a newage STi which comes with a strong bottom end, bombproof transmission, brembo brakes and a better quality interior than early Scoobs.
If you drive them properly then an Impreza will slide its tail out no bother mate. But you've obviously never driven an STi Type R or Type RA... which are extremely tail happy when pushing on.
It's usually one of three reasons:
1. They have never owned one but read the internet and believe all the shite they read.
2. They have owned one and had problems because it has been treated like shit before they got it or they haven't run it correctly; lack of servicing, using correct fuel/octane booster, unmapped mods, preventative maintenance, etc.
3. They've got a mate who had to replace an engine in a 94 WRX three times in 6 weeks because the pistons are chocolate... but neglected to mention it'd been constantly cunted around a council estate showing off to pram face sluts 24/7.

Cheers,
Grant

I must say, I'd love one of the classic Imprezas with the super short gearing in, the RA or whatever it is. Would be hard to beat I think.
As Grant says above, you can get a pretty modern STI for the same price as a Saph now. Value which is hard to ignore in any language. Horses for courses really though, depends what you want from it.

I drove one for a while... The pace from that short box is great for ripping the estate up.... Really good motor.
I've been VERY lucky to have owned a 22B, RB5, P1 and imo the best of the bucn my version3 TYPE-R, absolutly balistic car that was, running motec, APs, anti-lag, only 350 with 345torque but fook did ot get to 130mph quickly, i ran a 12.4 @ 109 in it at Pod.
Grant's exactly right, you get SO much more car for your money with a Subaru than with a cossie, yes i love the YBs but don't be blinkered, it can be a fatal mistake, just make sure you get it mapped to take our fuel, boxes in classics aren't great, however the 6speed boxes are aesome, many upgrade their classic with these.
Hope that hepls..
