Date of manufacture, not date of registration - here or abroad.

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring...ses/DG_4022042 says:

Old vehicles constructed before 1 January 1973 (historic vehicles)
If your vehicle was constructed before 1 January 1973, you could tax it in the 'historic vehicle' tax class. Further information can be found on leaflet INF34.

Also says:
How to tax your vehicle in the exempt tax class

You can change to the exempt tax class at your nearest Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) local office.

Renewing your ‘free’ tax disc

DVLA will send you a V11 reminder to renew your tax each year.

The Caddy will have been incorrectly first registered as a 1990, happened a lot with Imports.

If your Dad gets the owners club to verify the year he can get the V5 altered and go Zero rated Tax.

Alternately try transfering a 1990 reg onto it, DVLA will soon wake up and want to change it to the correct year.

My Mustang is first registered in the U.K in year 2000, imported by me at that time, but manufactured in 1988 as proven by the Canadian reg document.
It got an E reg allocated.

got my 54 f100 in the uk now, that will get registered as a 1954 and will be tax free from when i register it, as above, any vehicle BUILT before 1st jan 1973 is tax free, doesn't matter if it was built on the moon, if it can be verified as built before 73 its free

yeah, definitely year of manufacture and not year of 1st registration on our shores, my mates '65 chevy impala is tax exempt, and that didnt hit our shores until about 10 years ago tops
