Default BMW M5's (new shape)

Who was it on here who owned the new shape (well E60) BMW M5? Been fairly quiet at work and been looking on pissyheads etc and I cant believe how much they have dropped in price! Tempted to sell the mercedes at some point soon and treat myself!!

Dont really know much about them, they look impressive on youtube and clarkson gave a goodish review of them, but would rather find out first hand what they are like. Insurance quotes havent been too bad and they do see 20mpg ish on decent runs so not bad for supercar performance!!

Anyone got experience with them? I presume servicing wont be overly cheap but are they reliable? Was looking at alternatives to them and all i could think of was a VXR8?

Cheers

they have now released the F10 M5 so the E60 model is no longer the new shape. That may help explain the price drop.

Yeah I have seen that F10 shape, does look nice. You can get the E60 M5's for about Ł15k now, some even cheaper but imagine they are dogs or cat ds etc

I was seriously considering an E60 M5 a year or so ago, the way the prices have dropped makes it even more tempting, such a fantastic car.

the only bad thing i can ever see wrong with them is the fuel cost and the MPG they return.

For me it would take the pleasure out of owning one as they are generally in single mpg figures

And they are now an affordable car to own, but i dont think for me they will ever be affordable to run.

One of the key points abiout the F10 development was fuel economy. So if that has improved the new one will be a real winner, sadly at over 80k, its not really an option yet

Friend of mines going round the ring, its an incredible car and i think he was an idiot to see it (although get a GT2 after). was amazing to see it fly round the ring, and then turn back into a posh cruiser for day to day, best of both worlds, and the noise its amazing!

had one along with my existing e39 m5 for about 6 months, my thoughts are, gearbox is not enjoyable to use around town, in fact downright annoying! fuel consumption even to someone like me used to thirsty cars is horrific,

conclusion in my case was, sell e60 keep e39.

Give it a few years and there will be some silly powered F10s about, guessing a basic remap will see you with 650bhp ish

Im not sure how easy it will be to map them on the systems they use though,

Im sure it will be done like you say in a few years.

Certainly an engine and drivetrain with massive potential, the dyno graphs are epic! The torque curve just flat lines where they decided to cut the climb, but if they had let it run it would have been fookin mental.

I wouldn't even contemplate an e60 without a BMW warranty check the price of parts and you'll realise that your 15k m5 could easily turn into a 25k car if it goes tits up!
Cars with over 60k on the clock cost over 2k per year for the warranty, read somewhere a new e60 m5 engine costs 28 grand.

I hate the E60's, the engine sounds great, and it's a quick car....but that's as far as it goes for me

they drink fuel, interiors look shite and compared to the F10 cheap...

price does vary slightly however an F10 M5 im sure can be had for 65K basic, still a good spec!

F10 M5 rocks my socks

was looking for one of these myself, go on m5board.com few guys on there said dont touch anything but 2008 models up as there were problems with clutchs gearboxs etc on the older models,
make sure you get one with bmw warranty as the early models are getting older and more problems are appearing so i was told

Having read above i'm a little put off now, I dont mind running / maintaining a car but 28k for an engine - ouch!!!

RC4 - whats your bro's 335 like, I really like them and the missus does as well, plus it will fit in my garage!!! Is it cheaper to run than the M5?

A mate of mine has a supercharged range rover and he thought about gettin an m5 instead, then after having one on an extended test drive he decided to keep the range as the m5 was too juicy lol. His previous car was an m3 as well.

Yes i liked mine, but fuel consumption was truly terrible! I had a tubi exhaust which was epic but very very loud outside, inside quiet though. Gearbox is terrible driving slow but fantastic on flat out runs. Oh and sounds like a diesel on tickover. Handles nice, great for power sliding lol. Quite quick when the revs were up but my sl55 could spank it. The 360F1 is a different league though especially in gearbox terms, power delivery is different the 360 feels like a go kart and nicer to drive around town and way better on fuel lol.

I would never buy another m5 or for that matter any m car.

M5s are amazing cars but i just couldnt live with the fuel bills. One of my mates has ran one for 4 years now and the fuel bills are ridiculous. Brakes are very dear and his has had 2 diffs and clutches under warranty.

Another mate has one for a short time.... hes also owned boxters, F355, F360, F430, 3 Gallardos, 1 GTR and all the usual cossies, evos etc and said the M5 was by far the worst on fuel out all those cars!!!!!

I think the E60 prices will really, really suffer in the next few years... I cannot see where the market is for them? SMG box is horrifically expensive if it goes pop, which is happening quite a lot if you go on pistonheads M power forum, and the M5 board! The cars under warranty will be ok, but when they start dropping off the BMW programme, who will put up with single figure MPG & huge running costs?

Most people won't run it as a daily due to costs, but would many people see it as a toy to tuck away for the weekend? Epic car though, once they drop below 10k I might be tempted in the future!

Misses is mad for a 520d or a 530 d in M pack trim, more a daily runner than the m5 tho, anyone know how they are reliability wise, manual or semi.never had and auto but the semi sounds like a good compromise.auto around town and lazy and manual when u want to drive it....

Chris, I just sold a 335i (standard unchipped car). felt faster than e46 m3 to me. Worth owning one for a bit of fun...like you do!

I'll probably out my vantage in the spring if you'd be interested I'll give you a nod!

Love mine had it over 3 years now with nothing major gone wrong the few things have been sorted by the warranty at service.

But they are dreadful on fuel i just did a trip to Milan and back in it and going steady it cost me Ł850 in fuel !

Be careful though as cheap cars can cost you!!, try getting one with BMW warranty

I'm sure it was - didn't the thieves take an axe to some of the internal boot panels? I seem to remember seeing pictures posted up here.

For me the E60 M5 is a great car in terms of performance, but the fuel costs and potential sevicing bills if something went wrong with it really put me off. I think I'd rather buy a low mileage mint E39 M5.

Tbh i think the E60 M5 is/was overrated.. One of my uncles had ome of the 1st ones back in 2005 and hes only done 12,000 miles init.. He reckons he gets 10mpg if he really puts his foot down

live with rough ones, repair them for people, fit clutches and sort out the back end smashing up and down off the tarmac every time the diff shits itself on power cos its fucked and back lashing all over the place,

then tell me you love them!

the sound horrid IMO
bits are stupid prices IMO
compared to propper cars like RS6`s of the same power they are shyte, erm, someone forgot to pot torque in the cage when they mapped it.......... IMO
build quality, erm...... BUILD QUALITY............... ah yes, all good IMO

Lapping the ring, a big braked (stoppers) 535dM is NO different, prove me wrong!

i hate these thing with a passion, seriousley.
my 450?!lb/ft 2.2 5 pot converted A4 left an M5 dead in the water untill 120 from a standing start from the A12 onto the A127 turnoff ramp (if you know it)
after futting a clutch in it for a punter and him "bedding it in" afetr it was recalibrated PMSL

id defo buy one, then use it to roast my food at a barabcue NICE
