FAO the RC car peeps
Im looking at getting the boy an electric one for xmas, but i dont have a clue about them.
seen some decent tamiya ones for about £80 im considering.
other makes will also be considered
i basically want an easy to use one as he will be 4 in two weeks, off road buggy type that will take some abuse from crashing etc. a spare battery and fast charger.
is it beter to go for a 4x4 one over 2wd for a beginner?
any help, info, where to buy etc will be appreciated.
cheers all

it now comes with an electric speed controller.
it does wheelies aswell.
Id deffinately consider this
Anyone remember that massive tamiya one, was it the clodbuster?, that thing was huge, well seemed it when i was 11
to the op, get a hornet or lunchbox you wont go far wrong with that and lets be honest all kids will love a monster truck.

want to spend about £100 max really.
the missus wants to get him some £40 nikko peice of shit, so ive already told her no to that one. but £180 is a bit too steep for something i will probably use more than him

The best tamiya is the FWD mini, I've got a couple in bits in the shed, one I use every now and then and a brand new shelf queen. Only can be used on smooth surfaces but are great bits of kit IMO.
I got a wee RC car from Toys'r'Us one christmas when I was a kid but I burnt the motor out within a couple of hours.. so that got taken back and was replaced with:

...which was absolutely ace. Took 8 rechargeable AA batteries, so always had a spare 8 ready-charged batteries ready and a charger with another 8 batteries on the go while I was playing with it. But that went almost everywhere from memory, down the stairs, over the garden wall, into numerous obstacles.
Got it in the attic somewhere, might look it out.
Cheers,
Grant

Something that runs on AA cells sounds like a pre built non tamiya 'toy shop' car.

Have an ask here fella http://www.msuk-forum.co.uk/ Good bunch.
As for cars off road is cool but limited imop due to decent places.
Treat him to this if off roads your pref http://www.modelsport.co.uk/maverick...products/39569
Ive got this http://www.modelsport.co.uk/maverick...products/38126 with the above brushless motor conversion in it,,Shifts
Parts for both above are ten a penny and cheap as chips as Maverick are an HPI sideline.
Tamiya/Schumacher speak for them selfs. But can be pricey...
Thought about Nitro??
Good Luck

only £34 posted of the bay,

it's unlikely you'll buy a tamiya or other 10th scale for under £100 new.

Went up to the attic to find it earlier and took some pics:

Ahh, That's a 'quick drive' one. An off the shelf pre built 1/14 scale (iirc) version. The one in the pic you posted is a 1/10 scale kit monster beetle. The original monster beetle was released in mid 80's, don't know when the quick drive appeared.
Get yourself some Sanyo eneloops and fire it back up

thats the mini version of the orginal,
I also had the monster beetle. I was really into Tamiya kits when I was younger.
the original monster beetle had a red chassis with gold wheels,
it used a stick type battery, 7.2volt I think
I got a reproduction lunchbox a couple of years back, painted it like the mystery machine, would definitely recommend as a starter car, but not for a 4 year old as the controls are massive!

can you still buy them? It came as a kit
