Bought a mk1 frs engine this week which was smoking.
Took head off to find det marks all over edges of pistons 2&3.
Are these scrap now ?
I know they don't look too clever but does that mean scrap ?
What's my options here
Cheers
Steve

i certainly wouldnt use em, i bet the sides aint to clever either, maybe even blown by the rings already
put a bit of oil in each pot with the pistons all half way down and see if it pisses thru or holds tight

TBH unless the ring grooves have been closed up, they would probably go again and run just fine, so it would depend on the application.
Certainly not something "nice" to have in your engine though.

Oil wont get past, you need to use something thinner like white spirit for that sort of test.

ive never had trouble using oil, i use the left overs from my fireblade servicing, i had a cvh in my garden i used oil for it showed 3 was down so its a garden ornament because my wife cant lift it to bin it
Would have to be very poor seal for oil to get past unless you left it a very long time.

so long as the bores and sides of the pistons are ok then i would clean them up with a file and reuse them, ive refitted much worse!
i put some back in an rs turbo once for a mate that i had to pick bits of a valve seat out of before i could fit them lol, its still going strong now at over 20psi

Given that it's all out of the car... I'd whip them out, check and clean up the block then fit some nice shiny new pistons for peace of mind. No point pissing around and doing this kinda shit half assed pikey style IMO.

it depends on application. as an example on our cat d8s work approx 2000 hrs a year which would equate to around 80000 miles a year in a road vehicle, and they run at flat out revs all day, when i rebuild the engines i fit new pistons regardless as although they are still good condition they will fail before the next engine rebuild is due causing a premature failure, but in your case if the damage is all above the top ring they could be cleaned up and used again if you decided you wanted to, must be filed up though so as not to damage the bore, in saying that if it its damaged it will have probably already damaged the bore anyways.
I imagine there will be some serious piston issues if they had that much det over them. Whip them out and I expect you'll be seeing the pistons cracked between the rings!

Whenver I see a "it only needs..." type line in an advert I always make the assumption if they really believed that they would just do it themselves so they could sell the car as working!
