Whats with these new fog lights that come on when turning....
General Car Related Discussion. To discuss anything that is related to cars and automotive technology that doesnt naturally fit into another forum catagory.
It is a form of adaptive lighting if I remember correctly.
BMW have a separate bulb in the headlamp, Vauxhall and Ford have headlamp internals that actually move (along with some other makes) and other manufacturers, like Mercedes, use the fog lamp for that facility.
didnt the old citroen sm have headlights that changed angle with the steering so it lit round the corner?
that was like 40 odd years ago lol. it never took off then, so why the comeback? lol

some of the latest vag stuff has it as well when the headlights are on the fogs come on when the steering is a certain distance, a mate had a golf in his work earlier in the year that had it, and it didnt look like it made much difference really just another gimic to go wrong, and get raped at the dealers to get it fixed.
My 3 door has a adaptive cornering lights, to activate them you just swing the back end of the car away from the apex of the bend using 2 bar of boost
I think this has been the common practice since before the mk1 escort. This lighting might take off this time due to traction control limiting the steer from rear capabilities.
the thing that gets me with them is i've seen and heard of people getting £30 on the spot fines for driving round with their fogs lights on when its not foggy, so when these come on automatically, surely they fall under the same law as driving with fogs on when the weather and visibilty is fine?? maybe im jus a bit jealous that my mk2 escorts lights are about as usefull as throwing matches infront of the car as i corner,

I hate that too when people drive around with there fog lights on when its not foggy.
The 1948 Tucker has a headlight in the middle that was connected to the steering!
It ws the SM I was referring to as 40 years old (came out in the early 70s) rather than the idea, but didnt realise there were any cars that far back that had tried it.
The new Range Rover's have that system, when you turn say left the left fog light comes on and points to the left, first time i drove it in the night you turn and all of a sudden there is a light there you shit yourself becuse you think its a bloody car coming up beside you
why dont the councils just put brighter bulbs in the street lights on the corners
You're lucky if your council still lets you have the luxury of street lights. Round my way and other towns in my area our councils are turning most of the lights off so in a road that used to have say 20 lights on there's now probably 4 or 5 and it's not just the rural roads it's literally every road, street, cul de sac and alley ways in our towns.
I don't know about brighter bulbs, i think we need brighter councillors.

My local authority are doing it now. All street lights being turned off between 12-6am. There are some exception criteria though where lights are being left on like at hazzard areas, accident spots and roundabouts or where CCTV is in use. Unfortunately there is a very real reason for it. It will save (in Herts) about £1.6m a year in energy and with the ever growing green constraints being put upon us lessens the bill for the carbon output of the local authority. That's additional money that can be pumped into other areas
My missus also has these extra lights on her Clio. You notice the extra light but I don't find it helpful
