Default escort rs turbo series 2 really hard to start.

hi people, im in need of a little help. i have a series 2 escort rs turbo engine fitted in my fiesta, and im having a mare starting it. it take ages to get it started some times it wont start at all. engine is turning over normally, i have change the plugs,leads distributer cap and rotor arm, new battery and alternator. aswell as fuel pump. i have disconected the cold start plug, but this made no difference at all. the plugs are staying dry also. when it does start it runs well without missing etc. hope someone can shed some light on this. thanks and sorry for the essay. thanks shaun

You seem to have ruled out a fair amount there mate maybe try swapping the metering unit if you can.

when it running,get the co checked,as it could be lean,and needs the co turning up,

did you fit the acumulator when you did the conversion?
it does sound like the metering head though tbh.

many people are quick to just blame the metering head on rst's as they have little to no understanding of how it works, first two things i would check are
1, disconnect the fuel pipes from the injectors and put the ends of them into a bottle 1 bottle for each one, crank the engine and make sure they are all delivering fuel instantley
2, remove the fuel return line and make sure it is free of blockages

do these checks then post results

i have just had the car moted on tuesday and it was running 3.3 somthing on co, limit is 3.5,

hi mate, i have removed the injector pipes from the top of the metering unit and cranked the engine, no fuel is coming out from there, there is fuel visible when the pipes are removed though. i also disconected the cold start pipe, again from the metering unit and that pumps fuel when the fuel pump primes. is this a good way of testing or do they have to be removed from the inlet insted.
i also have changed the fuel pump relay with a known working one from a friends car. that made no difference.
just got to do the return line now. thanks shaun

Could be the coolant temperature sensor. However typically they fail the other way round, telling the ECU that the engine is cold and therefore causing problems once the car is warm. Might still be worth a check though, maybe it's not connected at all or something. It sits on the underside of the inlet plenum.

ok i have got to the bottom of the problem, it turned out to be low fuel delivery pressure. some how there was like black silicone that had found its way to the fuel pump and blocked the inlet of the pump. now i havent a clue how or why it got in there. i have cleaned it all out and its starting well. thanks for all the help shaun
