Angry Help and advice

Hi all, ive recently bought a 1990 s2 rs turbo and need some advice.
Everytime the dump valve kicks in its spitting oil out and also pushes steam through my bonnet vents. Ive had new water pump, timing belt and tensioner, ht leads and rocker cover gasket. Also done a full service.

i have a vague recollection of blue smoke and white smoke and one being the engine and the other the turbo.

is there much play in the propeller within the turbo? are the pipes connecting to the turbo all covered in oil inside?

Im gonna have to check the turbo out but there is defo oil in my pipes because my dump valve is spitting it out all over my ht leads and all over my vent plate which the previous owner put on. Think he knew about this problem because there is only 1 vent plate on. He must ov put it on to stop oil spurting out the vent.

If you are competent with the spanners you should fit a ZVH can be done for a few Ł100.
or fit a another used cvh if its the rings

zvh im guessing is a zetec engine. How complicated is it to convert. From cvh to zvh many thanks for your recent replies.

first i would check the turbo, take the boost pipe off and check the shaft has no in and out play, there should be a bit of up and down play.
if you can feel it move in and out then its knackered and you need a new turbo this is probably as good a time as any to do a compression test on your engine to see how things are.
once you have done that you will have a better idea of what to do next.

Get yourself a compression tester and check the compression both dry and wet, this should tell you what nick the piston rings are in, and can then potentially rule them out if the result is good.

Also my RS turbos bonnet only had the one vent, on the passenger side. I presumed this was to prevent water dripping onto the air filter, amal valve and battery
So i wouldn't say this was fitted to hide any problems around the DV area, probably just a coincidence.

just a quick question, as it's been a while, the play in the fan that would indicate knackered seals?

Blue smoke - Oil

Black Smoke - Fuel

White smoke - Water

if you can pull the compressor wheel in and out slightly yes it knackered as oil will be able to seep past the seal and then into your boost pipes (out of your DV) and into your engine.
it will move up and down a little that is normal on this kind of turbo.

Hello.
Have you changed the breather filter that sits on left side of the rocker cover. If this never been changed, then that might be your problem.also if your running an aftermarket oil seperator can lead to more oil usage due to poor designs.

Blocking the metering unit to breather system will help but make sure its not something serious like rings etc if you do.

Turbo play is fine, long as it minor play.even in and out small fraction.ive had in and out play for two years and works fine.

Ive replaced a water pipe that had a leak today and run it to garage. Mechanic said its not piston rings or turbo problem. He reckons the breather pipe is shite and has no filter and needs new valve stem seals so gonna get em sorted out and go from there thanks guys. Will put a pic up soon.

It has both bonnet vents but the vent on pass side next to dump has plate attatched to bottom. At the mo its stopping the dump spitting oil through onto top of the bonnet.

Sorry mate, i meant vent plate, i wrote that out twice because this website has a tendancy to 'page not displayed error' and couldn't really be arsed to type it again, looks as though i missed the one important word out though

Glad you got it figured out though
