House Extension.....
Anyone ever built their own extension ? We have had planning permission for a single story rear extension granted but the bank had refused any extra funding.... Looks like I will be doing it on a shoe string... Anyone done anything similar ? Chris
I have.
It is not difficult.
I drew the plans, applied for planning permission, sorted out the party wall agreement and built it.
The only things I didn't couldn't do were;
Electrical testing to suit part P of the building regs.
The gas pipework and connection to the hob.
Ha !
Ignor the assualt rifle next to the shovel, you don't need one to build.
Mine is a big'un
measuring 8m x 4.5m

I spent more time in the ground digging and sorting out the drainage than anything else.

did a double storey extention on mine a few years ago.my brother inlaw was a joiner to trade and used an architect to draw the plans and subby'd the rest out to collegues,i worked in b&q at the time so go a good deal on the materials, his brickie fucked off to germany after putting down the first few courses so i gave a brickie that worked for me in the q a few days holiday and me and my brother laboured for him....lol bit of roughcast and a roof later and the results were stunning.i did all the internal stuff myself.give it a go and save a few bob..
Did my own single storey extension about 3yrs ago. Did it on a building notice so didn't need to go through the pain of planning permission.
Did have the benefit of working in the trade and my old man is a brickie.
Most time and money was spent in the ground, keep an eye out for main drains running through your garden!!!!!! Started digging the foundations the day after my little boy was born, wife not impressed.
Started in feb and we were using the kitchen for Christmas and that was just working saturday Mornings and Evenings towards the end. All in just under 10k including Kitchen.
Best bit of advise: Keep the building control man on your side....
If you do go ahead drop me an email and I'll put in touch with a couple of good suppliers for your bits and pieces.

I did my own one a couple of years ago.
Slightly different from a traditional build as mine is a kit house so timber frame but you will get the idea.

I plan to, and have no building experience other than the garage i've just built. I got a bricky in but did the rest myself pretty much. Roof, trusses. etc etc. If your not familiar with brick laying its not worth it IMO as you'd be far too slow. A bricky chargers £300-400 per 1000 bricks inc labourer etc. Approx 64 bricks per square meter (9 inch wall) Of course you'd use blocks in the inside, but gives you an idea.
