Default Insured but should i use it

Right i bought a van today insured it 5 mins before company closed for the weekend. i've drove it home etc checked to see if insurance is showing which it isn't the police are setting up ANPR checks everywere and all though i am insured i have no way of proving it till monday

My mate reckons the police would just impound it if stopped and i'd still have to pay to get the van back for it not showing up as the police are doing there job.

Question is is that true and would you use it?

It is sadly true now, the police are not allowed to use any discretion now with this issue, so even if they believe you they still have to take your car, and you pay for it.
Not all insurers are as quick as they should be, they have in theory 3 days to log the cover onto the system, but some take months, for which they are now being fined.
Your problem is the broker cannot update the MID, this can ONLY be done by the insurance company, so if they are shut at the weekend ?
Not worth the risk imo, speak to INSURER monday, NOT broker.

Just don't use it mate. Not worth the risk can't be anything important enough like touch wood life or death situation which requires use of the van and not another vehicle.

i've decided not to use it i'll just phone up on monday i've got a job through the day monday but i'll use it then as if i get pulled i can explain i've only bought it and will happily phone the insurance company to prove it's insured or give them the number to do so hopefully it will be on the system then i may ask them to email me a cover note to carry with me it's a pain paying for something and not be able to use it

even if you had the paperwork they would still impound the car as so many people get policies and cancel once theyve got paperwork that its literally not worth the paper its printed on any more

I am surprised no one has successfully sued for damages to cover the impound fees etc.

print off the online reciept and online policy, print off bank statement etc to prove you have paid, carry your licence and mot etc with you and you should be ok.

I'd still use it, as long as you asked for cover to start straight away and as rsturbolee says, keep a copy of the receipt with you.

They absolutely can use discretion. Same as they can with any offence. It's just that most choose not to simply because they are brainless wankers.

In fact, I think I'm being to kind to many of them

I had my BMW taken and was left on a street in the worst part of salford with my 2 year old baby when the police couldn't be bothered to check properly..... it took 2 and a half months to get my money for impounding my car back and letters to the police complaints authority and my MP. they just don't care sometimes very sad.... as is screws up any good will you might have had towards the police.

thing i dont get is that all insurers have a 24 hour accident line with access to basic policy details so why cant the police use the accident line/why cant the companies add it to the call centre staffs job???

Why dont they just scrap insurance and add basic cover to fuel ?

it's nothing but a farce.

I was hit from the rear just over a week ago. Would you believe my solicitor told me today, that the other parties insurance broker cannot give out his insurance details due to the Data Protection Act.

Like What the Fuck ???

Ship all these scummy insurance companies out to Libya !!!

Dont hate the drivers. It is the system that is totally and utterly fucked up and corrupt.
