a good excuse to buy an old ford!!
im 17 years old, and im insured for £790 a year on a 1987 1.3 escort with a company called Footman James. i got 0 ncb and this was my first insurance policy. i was amazed my mates are all paying £3000 ish on saxo's and 106's which are a bit boring. not like old school fords! to qualify for footman james the car has to be 20 years old and insurance group 1-3. give them a ring on 0843 357 1908, just thought i'd share that bit of good news
Not true with FJ you have to be 25+ IF you want to insure a performance car etc, however if it's a reasonable classic which the OP'S car is then it's 17. At the other end of the scale you can't be to old I.E 75+.
Good on you, glad to see someone who doesn't follow the usual route!

Only thing about classic car policies is that you don't earn ncb, and you can't drive other peoples cars.
Having said that, I'm 19, and have been driving my 1990 Mini Studio 2 since i passed my test at 17. I paid £550 last year, and i'm expecting it to go down in april, when i renew.
Even better, my car's a 1.3 and will kick a modern hatchback's arse!

nice one
classic insurance seems the way to go if you're after a bargain. it shocks me how much some new drivers are quoted, where do they get the money from? having said that, the cost soom plummets once you get some NCB built up.

You don't get the "Third Party Extension" anyway in the majority of cases anyway, especially as a young driver as in nearly all cases you have to be 25 or older and be fully comp to do so.
People also misunderstand this massively, it's basically designed for emergencys or one offs, there are many restrictions imposed, I.E the car cannot be owned by yourself nor can it be a hire car etc. Most companies are stopping this full stop as alot of people were abusing it, I.E insurance fraud! Also it only covers you for the bare minimum for you to be legal on the road, so if the car gets stolen for example you would not be covered!

/\ if the car was stolen in that case the true owners insurance would cover it.
some classic policies acrue NCB's although may not be taken into account for renewal on a classic policy.
third part extension is a dying breed due to abuse, been there done that but have proper cover now even on a borrowed car.

Just rang them up for a quote for when i pass 1.3 1984 Escort Third party fire and theft was £1388 for the year, or £2700 fully comp. Thats with doing about 4-5k a year but they said i will have to join an escort owners club to obtain the insurance?
