Default Widest wheels and tyres on a 3dr?

Hi guys

Have tried the search function but got no definative answers.

Basically I will be running mainly 17's but what is the widest i can go on the wheels and tyres, also offsets if people know whats best.

Currently run 7.5x17 Front with 215.40.17's and 8.5x17 Rear with 235.40.17's but these do rub

Would like to go as wide as i can go before it looks silly or the tyres look like balloons, arch mods are not a issue as car is going into bodyshop asap and they have agreed to make what i send it in on clear so no rubbing can happen.

Ta
Gavin

215/40/17 i've got 8" wide on the front with a ET33 I don't think you could go any wider.
And i've got a 10mm spacer on the rear to bring it out to ET23.
You'll really struggle to go wider on the rear as all size above like 255, 265, and 285 have a minimum profile of 50 so they would look awful.

255 can come in a 40 profile mate
265 can come in either 35 or 40 profile too

Pretty hard work on 3 doors.

I have et+22 8 inch wide wheels with a 235 tyre (240 tread width) and the fronts clear the coilover cup by about 7mm. I am thinking of machining 2-3mm off the wheels as to make it 4-5mm clearance. This front of the quarter panel has been spaced out (by drilling the spot welds that attach them to where the bumper mounts to the chassis) - this is a very good mod and should be done to all 3 doors as it creates a lot of clearance. Thus for me a +25 offset for a 8in wheel would be perfect (but very close to coilover on spring cup).

The rears have heaps of clearance on the inside and could fit more width easily - I would think that a 9" with a offset of +35 would be perfect.

You will need a lot of trimming and what may work on one car may not on another.

I have been meaning to do a photo guide on my car for fitting wide wheels - will do as have not seen much info on here. I will take some photo's.

Lincoln in essence a 8" wheel is 9" and with a 235 tyre there ia not alot of room left on the inside so anymore would be asking for trouble imo.. Iv got 8" on the front and wont be able 2 run anything more than a 215/40 as thats catching the bodykit and is only 3-4mm from the koni cup. Thats et35.. For some reason each car varies when it comes to wheel width i know of a few guys that run the same et and tyre as mine and dont catch where mine and a few do.

We spec 9 x 17" ET 23 all round on our 3dr /RS 500 racecars but this takes some serious front mods and proper suspension , rears arent usually an issue .
We keep sets on the shelf of the 9 x 17" ET 23 GpA Dynamics rims in gloss black at Ł600 delivered uk + the vat .
Its these that Ronnie Amis will be using this coming year so we can see how he gets on with them .

Yes, only a regular X-sport lower blade with a bit of ply behind it

Not many about in that size mate but if you put the size into ebay there was 2 different ones on there last night.
Obviously not alot but assume listings are down due to time of year.

235/610 x 17" as per the pic of car above although these are full 9" wide race tyre not a roadcar tyre with a huge balloon above the sidewall , yes youre right as well about the steel drop down bracket circled as this interferes with turning , we remove it and also pull the base of the wing out there too .

Thanks mate
Do you know roughly how much to space it out by?
Cannot remove the bracket on mine as its a roadcar so would look wrong with the fittings like you have on your race car, that and im not chopping up a gen 500 bumper, lol

What do you mean by proper suspension mate?

I run 9x16 on the rear of my 3dr. Currently with 225/40 tyres but I find these too small. Next ones will be 245. I don't rub my arches at all atm but mine are a bit modified.

I currently run 225/35/17
Wheels are ET38, 8J wide
I run 20mm spacers on rear and 10mm spacers on front as this brings the wheels out to the arches nicely.
Spax shocks
No scrubbing anywhere

Yes Gav as what Tony said - I space mine by 20mm. Basically put as big a spacer so the bumper still looks OK. If you are careful with drilling the spot welds you could space it and retain the standard bumper fixings.

I will take some pics.

hi gav

i wouldn't be to worried about the with of your rims i would be more worried what tryes you are going to put on them

you know my rl7 are et25 and are 8" when i put the R888's on the rims i had to rasie the backend up by about 20mm simpley because they are alot wider than normal road tyres .....the 235/40 17 R888 is more like a 255/40-17 belive it or not and the top of the tyre over hangs over the rim if that makes sense

i know your going for a fair bit of power but i would just get some road legal slicks of some kind even if you had 10" on the rear with normal road tyres your going no where wheel spin city you know i always tell you the best way to go about it

was thinking of this myself tonight

have a set of 5 stud granada hubs handy,

they are et35-42 pcd112 and 5 stud

have a mate selling a cheap set of bbs lm reps. they are audi a4 fitment and are also pcd112, 5 stud, et42 and are 8''

would these fit or is there problems with the bore size and clearance would i need spacers or arch modding???

cheers, i think they would be amazing on a 3 door

Blast from the past that one ,lol .
An ex thundersaloon that Phil Collard went rally Crossing with help from mountune in the early 2000's , Steve fitzpatrick bought it and ran it as above , i bought the Roller when he Broke it up and sold the basic shell onto Paul at North yorks . Im pretty sure they were only 8" wide comps on an ET15 offset with spacers tho .

thats cool tony ,i just thought with the integrale type rear arches they would have been capable of a wider rim .

Was talking to Marco about this yesterday and he was saying that to go as wide as that you have to run spring and shock on the rear as with coilovers the springs gets in the way.

What ever happened to that car Pete, not seen it for yrs now??
