I know with 02 you could do it officially through iTunes, I did my old 3GS that way.

noticed the o2 site, cheers for the pointer!

its my old phone but i now have a new phone on the same contract if that makes sense

version number 3.0 (7a341)

will i need to update it first?

You need to go back into the menu mentioned before and you really need to list a few things.

Do not update.

What model phone have you ?

Do you have a PC or Mac ?

Ok, then in theory this should be straight forward enough.

Read this guide

That will get you unlocked and jailbroken on os3 which you have listed.
