Default electrical or alternator

I went out in my car this morning started fine got to tesco went did some shopping came out and went to start her up and nothing not even lights on dash there was nothing got a jump pack and she started first time then got home turned her off went to start her up again and once again nothing the volt meter says its charging so any idea what it could be. I have dodgy electrics that go into the stalk but surely it couldnt be that.

have you done a battery test see if 12v comming from iit m8

if your alternator wasnt working then he battery would just drain and it would cut out on you. also you should see about 14 volts across the battery and 12 volts with everything off.

try testing the batter after its been left for an hour. i recon its not holding charge so even though its showing 12 volts there wont be enough oomph in it to start the car.

does it crank? see how low the voltage drops when cranking?

14 volts when the engine is running, this will prove the alternator is working. if not then its the battery, if its been fully discharged the lead falls off of the plates inside rendering it useless as it doesnt hold charge.
You may see 12v when the car is off but as soon as you put a load on it the voltage will collapse.

ok thats what i was leaning towards when i turned car of there was absolutely nothing when i tried to start her like no power at all

You need to test what power is at the battery with car running, so long as it's +13V UNDER load I.E headlights, blower etc then it's fine. I suspect the battery myself not helped with the colder climate at the moment.

12V as said is NOT proof of a good battery as it may well collapse under load, or have a dead cell.

i had something similar happen to mine turned out to be dodgy connection in the black plug on the ignition switch, not sure if your is the same but may be woth looking at
