Default Gearbox question..

Had this posted in the main area but as usuall get no serious(Or even answers at all)in there.So..

Box sound's and drives fine with no crunching or whining ect...except when, for example:

Driving along comming up to junction so changed down to 2nd,release clutch and as the rev's drop down when they get to about 1.5-2k there is a terrible transmission noise.Sure its the gearbox sounds really loud and high pitched
So,ive been told its the diff bearings are worn and need a new box.Right or wrong?

Just in case it could be something else rather than change the box and still have this problem

Thanks

Do you see anything strange in the speedometer when it does that, jitter perhaps?

The diff bearings can be replaced but it means splitting the box

Nope, nothing strange happens except the noise mate What if it did anyway? What would that mean as my old RST's speedo wiggled about at 30mph

Is splitting the box alot of hassle?Alot more than just changing it?

Thanks

ello matey

ive got exactly the same prob with mine and if u leave it much longer it wil progress to the other gears too as mine is doing it in 4th now

took it to a mech and he said its the diff bearings so its easier to get anew box than rather just replace them, a cost which im not looking forward too

Rather not go down a diesel box route.Apparently they are no stronger and have no LSD...
You can get RST box's for about Ł180 mate from a breakers Easy enough to change them it seems.Apart from the ABS belts

So how long did you get out it before getting worse? Is it drivable?Roughly in mile's

Cheers

Two of my gearboxes have done this and both times its been the main shaft bearing that has failed I dint drve with either box for long, as soon as i herd it was on its way out i got it back to work (did no more than 40 miles). Once the bearing has filed the main shaft stars to move about, this causes the gears not to mesh correctly which results in the teeth being damaged.

It impossible to say how long the box will last!

Worn diff bearings can be often diagnosed by a shaking speedo needle under torque. If it's the main shaft bearing, then the shaft is propably fucked too. This leaves at least these options:

Part with some cash and get a bullet proof box from Bernie.

Buy any used box and hope it lasts.

Buy a used box and swap the diff for the LSD form your old unit and while having the box open, change the bearings as well.

If the main shaft is not yet FUBAR, you can use a larger IB5 gearbox bearing with a separate inner race. This requires the casing to be machined sligghly and this can be done over here for around 50-100e. None of these conversions have yet broken down to my knowledge. (knock on wood)

There was a good topic on S2 gearbox repair some months ago. Try searching for it as it might help.

to be honest with u stoo , it sounds like there whining under strain!!! and rather than splitting the box , it's just as easy picking up a box for a ton!! swapping them over and at the same time uprate the clutch!

thats the route i would go!

good luck m8

stoo thats what happened to mine as well, and as markyboy said it will progress into other gears, at the moment mines even doing it in 5th when im on the bypass and come of the gas
I had a gear box spare in my garage, so i sent it to a mob in glengarnock to get it reconed as im on my third box and would rather be safe than sorry
If i were you i would do the same cos you never no what someone is selling you till its in the car
