Default Serial port question

Evening folks,
I've just got a copy of VAGCOM to try and clear some of the bugs on my Golf, software installed nicely, but I cant plug the lead into my laptop!

Is there an adaptor available to plug this into a USB port at all? If not i'm stuffed

*edit* just looked on ebay and there fookin hundreds of them for £1.50

Next question, are they any good? ie will it work?

The cable for VAGCom is £250 odd from RossTech (Who make the software). There is variants of the cable about, but not guaranteed to work with the software. I bought a £5 USB to serial converter from EBAY, which didn't work with my Esc Cos autronics, but haven't tried with my Skoda's OBD II port yet.

Yes serial (RS232) is a old technology now (but very good) so it's getting faised out so any newish system won't have it the same applies for PS/2 and parallel ports.

You can get USB to serial connectors but have heard these cause problems as the software can not communicate properly as it's not a straight COM connection.

MOXA do good ones. We are a supplier for them but so are many others. http://www.moxa.com/product/UPort_1110.htm /

The main issue with some cheap ones is a lack of hardware buffers (important for large data transfers / streams). Some of them don't even implement the handshaking lines.

The biggest problem with most USB to serial adaptors is they can only use the standard baud rates (speed of data transfer) that VAGCOM rarely uses for most cars and use one that is "near enough" which makes them unreliable or not work at all.

Can't say I'm familiar with VAGCOM and that specific issue - will make a mental note in case it crops up in another situation!
