Anyone got a set up guide for the auto-choke on a VV carb? Lately, although it starts first turn of the key without hardly cranking after 5-10 seconds of nice running it idles really really rough, idles at about 300 RPM and wants to cut out if you don't hold the throttle open slightly. If you drive it, its ok at low revs then hesitates, pops and bangs if you try and rev it, then if you put the clutch in the revs drop really low again and sometimes just cuts out. It seems to run rough until the auto choke turns off then it runs fine, but this takes around 10 minutes?
It also stinks of fuel so obviously throwing in a very rich mixture and I'm wire brushing the plugs every week to 10 days. I've set the carb up so it runs really nice when its warm and doesn't black the plugs up when driving normally. It doesn't have the pipe that runs from the manifold to the carb which probably isn't helping, but something isn't right...

 

There's quite a few things it could be on the VV,
Check, accelerator pump diaphragm, main control diaphragm, pull back slide and see how long it holds vacuum, ie it shouldn't snap straight back, you can always back off the choke setting as well, but I would also check the choke pull down is correct, and also the choke gauging.
Haynes book 1783 is ace on this carb, covers 95% of ford vehicle carbs, the VV is a good carb when going right.
