Hi all.
3 weeks ago I took over ownership of my Dads Mitsubishi Shogun 2.8td from 1994, my Dad had it from new.
Kinda got the bug of wanting to go off road, took it out last weekend for a bit of exploring the farm roads round Rutland and Leicestershire, and had a great laugh with my best mate, and end it with a proper muddy shogun. got some good pics too.
Now the things I really wanna know is what legal and what not. the rule I set myself last weekend were not going on bridleways ever if they looked like they had been driven on. track and lanes signed posted as road, and a few that were signed as "unsuitable for motor vehicle". came to one sign post on a track at T junction that said straight on was "under right of way no vehicles beyond this point so when the other way as I have been told you can have vehicles confiscated if found on the wrong tracks and lanes. So what is legal and whats not?
Do I have to joint some sort of club to be able to get on the loads of tracks we found the had locked gates on them?
Not overly interested in doing man made trails in quarries but more getting from somewhere to somewhere else on the lanes and tracks, and getting very muddy.

I used to go off roading with my old man in his Land Rovers, the best thing would be to buy a copy of Land Rover Owner magazine as they always advertise off road days / excursions in them, that way when you go to them you will meet fellow off road nuts who will tell you the best places to go.

My favourite so far has to be Bala in Wales, it has tracks from "novice" right through to "I couldn't give a shit about my car". Trentham Gardens is usually good too but its a busy site and not that big.

 

i too used to do a bit of offroading,, im not sure whats legal and whats not,, but TBH i didnt care aslong as it was fun

 

stick to byways as there open to all traffic. they should be marked on a local os map. watch out for walkers, some seem to think they own the road. always close farmers gates. should be ok then

For green lanes best thing to do is get yourself some land ranger maps. find the routes on them and then get on the blower to your local council and find out which ones are open and shut. I'm only over in Cambridge and the best off road sites close by are Devils pit and Tixover. Bit of a treck but best site i've been to is Kirton off road centre, they do weekend ones and you wont find a better place really.

 

According to the rules you should leave gates as you found them. open leave them open, or found closed, reclose them after. I've met people on the lanes that are polite and some that are wankers, best to stay polite, end of the day it will only take a small widening of the track and you can get past them. Best mod for then..... my 170db train horn!

As above with green lanes or BOAT's (Byway open to all traffic) will be shown on OS maps - you can use:

http://www.multimap.com/maps

and click the OS map button once you've typed a postcode or something.

You should call and check if it has a Traffic Restriction Order on it first though. I'm sure no-one does...

I've noticed this most of the website and forums I've been on seem to be geared to Landy. All I can say is my shogun seem to have the beans, when I took it out, it was in 2wd for 99% of the time and never struggled, only used 4x4 once to get me up a grassies bank.
how do i know what good to drive on on a os map or land ranger maps?
Going to go have a go down tixover but I may struggle here as the shogun is still my daily drive.

 

been in the seen for years just got back from weekend at kirton offroad centre looking at your location its close to you awesome place best pay and play site outhere imo

 

p.s lanes are ok but be very careful which ones you use otherwise you could end up with big fines or your 4x4 getting confiscated

does anyone on here go to tixover quarry? how much will I struggle there in my truck as its still a road/daily driver, plus untill I can afford some good tired, all ive got is some brigdestone tired, that are off road, but more on road.
What about Kirton, where is it, I think its not a million miles from me, but not sure. how much would I struggle there too?

 

didnt rate tixover tbh,kirtons amazin stuff for everyone there was a few there on roadys at weekend tackle deep mud you will get stuck theres loads of people there someone will rescue you straight away its part of the fun its north lincoln

Well ifs its that close im def going to go to kirton then, wents the next open day?

 

Tixover has some ok bits but really its all about the lake there, clay pit even my truck gets stuck.

Kirton is the best all round and top camping site for one of the weekends. we just couldnt believe how big the place was.
