Should the diesel tank lift pump be heard running for a moment when switching on the ignition, mine cannot be heard at all even with my ear against it underneath the rear seats, i am suspecting it is faulty, how do I check it.? the car sounds like it is running on 3 cylinders, if i try to drive it, it will go in to fail, limp home mode.

Also is the number 1 cylinder at the cam belt end or gearbox end?
