cylinder head
the only major difference between 2wd and 4x4 heads is the piece of ally on the exhaust side for the 2wd turbo damper. the 4x4 does not have this. however, some people cut it off 2wd heads. obviously a 4x4 head is beneficial in that it will be newer and the ally will not have softened, but if you are using a 2wd exhaust manifold you need some way to mount a turbo damper to help support the weight.
there is difference between the water ways , the VERY late 2wd come with the 4wd waterways so its not a 100% way of telling but the majority of 2wd heads will have the large waterways on both sides and the 4wd will not!!

Combustion chambers are different in 2WD and 4WD. and cylinderhead it self is different as sayed by swerv. the turbo damnpers are in 2WD as sayed by foreigneRS. so actually 2WD and 4WD cylinderheads are quite diffirent.
For as for as I know the optical difference will be the turbodamper mountingpoint. My 4x4 head is packed so I don't have the number, and the 2wd head is sold, although here are a few pics.
Good luck..

Maybe someone else has a pic of the top of a 2wd head?

Also, 2wd heads have the water temp gauge sender on the front drivers side, whereas on 4x4 heads the sender is at the rear on the passenger side (referring to UK RHD cars).
