i've always used www.dayinsure.com! i would advice also making sure the breakdown cover box is ticked, iirc it was £1.80 and defo comes in handy, very quick for recovery too and for the sake of £1.80 was a brilliant service!

What about Hpi'ing the car and getting the 7 days free insurnce, not sure on age restrictions tho?

http://www.hpicheck.com/driveaway.jsp

Are there any restrictions?

You can benefit from up to 7 days' free insurance cover when you get a no obligation quote from Aviva. Provided the car you want to buy is a passenger car or light commercial vehicle (up to 3.5T) you can benefit from this special offer. Aviva will send you a cover note which you can use to insure your new vehicle.

Driveaway cover is available throughout the UK, plus the Channel Islands and Isle of Man, but not Northern Ireland. Applicants must be under 75 years and the offer is subject to standard acceptance criteria by Aviva. Only one 7 day free Driveaway insurance policy is permitted per customer per vehicle registration number.

i had the same problem i phoned mycar insurance company virgin and told them my current car had broken down they kept my daily car covered fully comp as normal and gave me temp cover fully comp on the second car for 14 days for £28 they even let me add the £28 to my current installments a month so my monthly payment went up by just a few pound

That worked for me a few weeks ago and I'm under 25 (23 to be exact). Not bad for a £19.99 HPI check
