Has anyone used a welded diff on track and if so what was it like? Did it crab on tight bends, etc.

Just bought a E36 drifter last night but it has an open diff and want to get it welded but also want to use the car on track too so it needs to do track and drift reasonably well.

 

good value for money! just not so good for under steer in the wet!


in my old black escort it had the viscous plates changed for fixed plates so it was locked all the time and was great to drive

My m8 uses a welded diff in his sierra 24v on track, for track use he doesn't rate it, but he also does a lot of drifting hence having to the lock the diff

Two words: Dick Johnson.

He had a spool (same as a welded diff) in his RS500. IIRC all Australian touring cars still use spools to this day.

im gonna give it a bash as its a cheapy anyway so if it drives shit on track i will have to live with it as it will spend most of its time sideways on the limiter

 

i drove a skyline GTST with a welded diff and circa 350bhp and it was ALL OVERR the place, had to be careful driving it on the road. fantastic for drifting though
even at low speeds the back end would come round on even 1/4 throttle, had to be awake to drive it.

I also know of someone who ran a Spool in his 3 door for racing and couldn't get on with it at all.

I'd say it totally depends on how you drive but I can't see it being ideal

 

well the main aim for this car is for drift as i wanna use my 3dr mainly for track.

Dont care if i bin the E dirty 6 - its what it was bought for

 

Personally im bit aggressive on track so not sure how i would get on with it. Guess we will have to find out

Very true, I've been using a welded diff for probably round three years in my daily driver / track car / drifter. My driving style is geared toward oversteer so I don't find it understeers in the wet at all. Only time I notice it negativly is when I'm parking in a tight space on full lock, the inside wheels skips.

nice one - just need to find some cheap crappy 15" wheels now and need to get rid of the leather interior in the E36.

Hopefully the sale of the leathers will pay for the bucket seats and harnesses - dont think proceeds will stretch to a cage so will have to see what else i can sell off the car to pay for the cage.

This is on a proper shoe string budget

Have a look on Tramp drift or driftworks. E36 bits normally come up cheap on there.

 

already on there but never really bothered but seeing as i have a relevant car to use now, i think i will be using those forums a bit more.

What do you mean, its fun. But yes it hard to get on with sometimes. If you do a trackday and its warn then its good. But get a damp or wet day and it starts to be a pain.
Used mine for 5 or 6 years

Its a bloody good fun car though lol.It was mint when you took me on track at croft in it.I was laughing like fook when you were drifting in the corners.Top car.

 

Got a bit sick at croft when the rain came down, yes easy to drift about and fun. But with all them dam EVO's and other 4x4 crap about i had to look in the mirrors all the time. Far more fun in the dry with a welder.
