Default Spec r new mk2 frs intercooler tested

As title Spec r and Madevelopments at the weekend have tested the new design intercooler. it was done on a completly standard car.this was done on motorworks rollers back to back. the stanard one was tested and made 288bhp with charge temps of 49 degrees and rising. the new one was then tested which made 306 bhp and 15lbft more than the standard one with charge temps of only 33 degrees. nothing else was done to the car. was also tested on the road which i believe worked even better. with more boost it will give even more gains in power the new spec r intercooler is of same design as the new cosworth one which has had superb results. hope to get the graphs up to show results. great work for both company,s

i've always wondered if it is really fair to compare intercooler gains on a rolling road where the wind force will not be the same?

It's done back to back within around an hour i'd assume, as they just swap the coolers over?

saw this at ford fair looks a smart piece of kit.

had a chat with pete/mark and it looks like they may use my car to develop the bar and plate cooler kit for the mk1 FRS

yes i understand that, but the extra heat on a RR it will be obvious that a stanadard IC will struggle and a larger one will be much better but in real life on the road would the gain be as big?

both were tested on the road as well mark aint that stupid is he. the charge temp difference was much the same so IS a good comparison. the temp on the rollers were within 3 degrees of temp when doing top speed run

do you know the temp differences between the two on the top speed runs?
that would be intertesting to know..

[quote=andrewg;5040609]do you know the temp differences between the two on the top speed runs?
the standard cooler was running 49.8 degrees
spec r cooler running 33 degrees this is on a standard car too
the amient temp was 22 degrees
im sure mark will verify this. he was really pushing it too

This is the before and after with the new intercooler and the fan used http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCZDodUAn8Y
We did back to back road and dyno testing air temp with this fan we normaly see a 3c diff in intercooler temp to the road no matter the hp this fan is awsome.
The test on both were carried out using the same road speed and gears and tested several times to get a consitant bench mark up to 125mph so the figs given are correct with the test on the stock one increasing still at the finish point so I would expect still a big increase in temp over what we saw,
The Spec R on had stopped increasing temp from about 100mph and on the last run which we added 20mph on top of the test there was no increase in temp, all test were done on a closed test track,
The increases will get bigger as we were only throwing stock boost at it,
The testing I have also done on the Cossies have been awsome on Ades GT35 running 2.6bar boost we saw only 10c increase in temp upto 175mph and on the 150mph tests between 5 to 7c on the other runs,
On Rods GT42 we only saw a 7c increase on the same test which is just awsome so we are not even expecting any use of water inj when we do the topspeed test,
It has been known for years the Garret bar and plate cores are the best avl given the size and we have been using them on evo's for years, So I put it to Spec R lets give these a go on the Cossies when we started the development of Rods and Ades cossie and I do belive the risk was well worth it especially with how the top feed intercoolers improve pressure drop and flow through the intercooler If only we had thought of this years ago.

I'd have thought it a far better test.

Overall external temps are more controlled, airflow through the core/car is controlled and the same volume of air.

So if one IC is better than the other, it should be very apparent.

The difference is like night and day, off boost it drives like an aspirated engine, breaths so much better. It takes a lot less throttle to do what it did before the new 'cooler

Is this a direct fit?

Does it require the horns to repositioned and does it retain the plastic outer shrouding? (Looks like it)?

Any pictures off the car?

Obviously interested here

Yes, a direct fit, not too sure if the horns had to be repositioned though. I don't have any pics off the car, sorry. Give Pete a call to discuss your needs, you won't be disapointed

Just spoke to Pete at Spec-R, he supplies the 'cooler with ducting plates so you don't have to cut anything. He also supplies brackets to mount the horns so no re-drilling

what was the water temp differance's with the 2 intercoolers fitted?
pro alloy did alot of testing on there design in a wind tunnel at 150mph for 15 minutes when they designed there's.
will this intercooler make the water temps rise with it been so thick?
