Cool Restoration of my Escort RST S2 Spec´89 (From Spain)

Hi friends!

First, I´d like introduce... I´m The Skerpia and I have a Escort RS Turbo S2 Spec ´89. I love this body, especially mk4, forever.

I´m from Spain (country to wich I would like to invite all of you ) and here admire your passion for the Ford in general. I am fascinated with the work that you do in your cars during a restoration or rebuild.

I hope that you accept me in your beautiful forum.

Throughout day, I will be putting photos of the laborious restoration of my unit.

Second... the promise... hope you like it:

There´s much hard work ahead...

Regards.-

Welcome, your front bumpr looks wierd with it being smoothed.

Is it going to be a standard resto? (or going by the date you've done it already.)

Thanks.
Out of curiosity... Why says the engine is not standard for the year?
My car was manufacturated in 1989.

It´s true that the motor it is very dirty !

This photos represent the bad condition of my initial unit.

The front bumper it´s HORRIBLE !!! The previous owner is a naff man...

In the first place, I´ll put photos of the resto far as I have done. Later, I will update the thread as I go forward.
My objetive is regain the original state of Escort RST Spec '90 with different changes, always respecting the original look.

I don´t reject a state 2 or 3 in the engine.

Together, I have other project and usually have little time, so it will be slow.

The result was spectacular!

I changed:

- The front edge protection.
- Quarter seal for windows.
- Rear bumper and side rs spoiler with wheel arch.
- One exterior mirror, right.

- Front blinkers original.

- Front lights new original ford parts.

- New rear lens gaskets:

- Alloy wheels center caps

- New Ford oval badges:

- New black decal geniune ford spec ´90 (photo spec ´88):

- New petrol cap:

- New front glass:

- New pedal rubbers:

- New locks and steering clausor with news keys:

- The rear exhaust is a ROAR by Don Silencioso. 2x85mm:

It´s legal in Spain, produce 89db.-

You´re absolutely right !

I love this front bumper (spec ' 90) and I couldn´t buy it yet.

I prefer the original before manufacturated in GRP. But... in my country is impossible to find and in ebay.co.uk, most sellers do not send to Spain.

And the exhaust... was coming when I bought it ! My dream is a full line of stainless steel Mongoose 3":

or

I will buy it someday.

The section on brakes and suspension haven´t yet touched. It´s because I´ve focused on the engine.
I think that mount the original front ventilated discs, 260 mm diameter. And rear drums, 229 mm.

14" = 356 mm.-

Edit:

I put this photo so you can watch:

The engine was cleaned and prepared to begin disassemble:

Here, with his brother:

His brother is a Escort Mk4 ' 89 1.6 Special Edition "GT". Has a swap to RST engine but now again have its a Weber carburetor because I´m adapting an air conditioning system original for 1.6 cvh and the exhaust manifold and Garrett T3 are an obstacle to change radiators. And intake manifold to replace the new box ventilation.

Visiting the Ford dealer, the owner is a great friend.

I replaced the starter.

Some mechanical problems...

- The throttle cable has broken through the area of the DISA.
- The termostast has been closed while driving on town.
- The cooling system has excess pressure. Probably, the head gasket has blown.
- There is excess combustion. Backfire. The distributor isn´t working properly.
- There are hitches to exceed 4500 rpm, I suspect amal valve.
- It has too much smooke to startup. Injector.

This is a temporally fix. Ford Spain doesn´t provide throttle cable. Very very thanks to ebay.co.uk !!!

Here are adding several missing part of interior.

It´s time to enter the operating room:

At first glance doesn´t seem damaged.

The evening doesn´t anymore...

I order the parts to repair them individually.

Protect the engine block to keep them from dirt.

This is beginning...

Hi The Skerpia!

I love your country, canary islands are beautiful.
Nice resto thread. I recommend original ford rocker cover gasket, it is not rubber but hmm i dont know exact word, "cork" ? Same material as the wine bottle cork cap.
I had problems with oil leak between cylinder head / rocker cover, problem is that if your rocker cover had been overtightened even once it will be warped and not sealing properly.

What i done i bought straight rocker cover and new cork gasket from Ford (4€) and tighten bolts with torque wrench. No oil leaks anymore.

Here is my engine:

Install that gasket first in the rocker cover, then find out which is the correct nm for the bolts with torque wrench. I am sure you can find tightening figures somewhere here.
