how eratically are we talking? Series 1 or 2?

the series 2 are particularly bad for it, you tend to find going round corners one way gives you a higher reading, and then corners in the opposite direction show a lower reading.

If thats all its doing then its perfectly normal, in a straight line at constant speed it should give you a fairly steady reading, and is an accurate reading of how much fuel you do actually have in the tank

series 2 mate. its goes up and down round bends very badly (full to empty) when its empty the gauge reads just under 1/4 full. and in a straight line it never stays level mate.

My experience of them is they usually run out touching the red section, you can hear the pump screaming at you when its getting close to running out though as it starts dragging air in

Yeah if my gauge goes to the red it's empty! I put more petrol in when it gets to 1/4 on the gauge as I know it's pretty much empty by then.
