coilpack rpm count in xr3
hi peeps iv been trying to get my std mk3 xr3 rpm counter to work from the 2.0 zetec coilpack, i guess fitting a rpm counter from the rs1600i would work but struggling to find any, is there any other way i could make my original rpm counter work with coilpack i hear its possible with a series of diodes can anyone shed any light on this please, any help/advice is much apreciated
If you take a wire from each OUTER wire of the coilpack connection, through(rectifier) diodes, then join the ends of these two wires at the opposite end to the coilpack this will ensure you get twice as many negative rpm outputs to use with the rev counter you have.
The diodes are directional, ie they have a silver band that must towards the load, in this case the rev counter.
A diode is a one way electrical valve in simple terms.
I would suggest some 3A glass pasivated rectifiers these do cost though, a mind boggling 28 pence EACH!!
Can get these from maplins item number N89CA, on page 805 top right hand corner of page.
If still stuck I have shed loads of these, or if you want a drawing to make mega clear just pm me your email etc.

hi tabetha, thanks for the reply iv been and got 2x 1n4004 diodes from maplin as been instructed before and wired as you described, but still no joy, and the rpm count is all over the place , however if i join 1 of the outer wires from coilpack to rpm counter wire it seams i get a good half reading,? i will pass maplins tomorrow and get the diodes you say and try again. thanks again for the advice.
It should still work better than that with the 1N4000 series, but give the 1N5408 a go as used this as I had some and worked perfect, let me know how you get on(pm), in case I forget the post, thanks, we may need also to amplify the signal.
