changing the timing belt
Just wondering if anyone can help. having never changed a timing belt before i was after some advice.
I have the engine and gearbox out of the car. I obviously need to get the crankshaft pulley off.
I have put the gearbox in 5th and need to get the retaining bolt out.
Do you have any tips on locking everything up to prevent everything just turning when I go to loosen the nut?
I was thinking of welding some bar to 2 19mm sockets and placing this across the nuts on the cam shaft pulleys to lock it all up.
OR
should I refit the engine and do it when it's back in so I can ensure it won't move.
Any thoughts / tips would be welcome. I've bought one of thise cheap 12v impact wrenches after reading an older post on here, so I'm hopeful removing the nut won't be a problem when everything is locked up.
Cheers

if the impact gun fails try 1/2"drive socket & ratchet and hit it with a hammer to try and shock it free be carfull not too hit the lugs on the cranck pully though then take spark plugs out to reset timeing as this will make it easyer too turn the engine over
when iv had the head off mine i go down the socket & rachet route with a hammer it moves a bit but the timeing can alwas be reset befor you take the belt off or seprate box off engine & lock the flywheel up

take the starter out if you have not allready and get a friend to lock a prybar against the teeth of the flywheel then either use your gun or a large breaker bar to loosen the nut, if you take the sparkplugs out as well so its easier to turn then if it does move you should be able to turn it back by just moving the pulley with your hands

Another way is to use 2 people, one holding a chain wrench around the pulley the other undoing the bolt, I don't mean one of these oil filter type chains but a decent 1/2" wide one made from motorbike chain.
When you do get the pulley off, if you remove the woodruff key, then use some fine lapping paste between crank and pulley to make it not such a stupidly tight fit by grinding slightly with the paste, putting coppaslip or similar when repalcing crank after having cleaned off the grinding paste will make it virtually fall off when the bolt is loosened if future.
I do mine up to about 80 lbft with NO threadlock it doesn't need it.
