Hi, I'm a new member with my first ford, an '86 Capri 2.8i (not the special). I noticed that when I was driving with a sat nav that my speedo is reading 15mph fast (85mph) when traveling at 70mph. Is it possible that a previous owner has replaced the rear axle with a slower final ratio one? The car has 15'' wheels but low profile tyres so they're not to blame are they? Anyway, reason I ask is that I need a new rear axle and was hoping that a 2.0 Atlas would be suitable (I can always get around an inaccurate speedo). Cheers.

 

i have a transit t280 from new, all standard and my sat nav says that im going slower than the speedo by 6mph..as for the axle on your capri, yes a 2l axle will fit physicaly, and is easy to change but the final ratio will be different, ... a 2.8 diff ratio will be 3.09 a 2l axle is about 3.77 i think so if you put on a 2l axle you will get better accelleration but lose top end, a standard 2.8 axle can be picked up cheaply enough. p.s. a standard 2.8 should only have 13" wheels

 

Cheers nellyscossy, good to know that the 2.0 axle is suitable. Agree 100% about the wheels!

 

If you swap to a 2.0 axle you will have to swap the rear brakes over as they are bigger on 2.8i's.Also if your car is 1986 and a 2.8i it should be a special and have an lsd as all 2.8is after 1984 were specials.

 

Didn't know mine was a special! Either way it didn't have the lsd on it when I got it, all it had was a standard diff (don't know what it was from) with the wrong ratio for a 2.8i that had been beaten up or ignored or both. Now it's wrecked the pinion bearing at least and started leaking both ends. Will be switching the brakes over anyway as it has a rear disc conversion that I want to keep.
