Changing to an older engine.. MOT rules question????
I have come across and older 2.9 12v engine from another granada, it is souped up to hell and is on carbs. I had the pleasure of driving the granada yesterday and it would blow a standard 24v away.. certainly not standard.. and is mated to a manual gearbox. I am going to be replacing my knackered 2.9 24v with this engine and box, my question is.. because this older engine does not have cats, how do i stand with MOTing the car, my car is a J plate and has cats.. and also with it being carb'd what about emissions etc.. please help.. don't wanna be finding i can't get it passed by doing all this work..
I have all the parts to convert the car to manual now so this engine and box is ideal.. and there is nothing I love more than a whacking great set of carbs being an old school lad.. it will certainly be different. but ain't we all. as you all know my granada is certainly in nice condition but is worthless really, it don't owe me a penny so I'm happy to do this.

the emissions doesnt go by the age of the car if the engine has been changed to a different one aslong as you have proof of the age of the engine it has to go through whatever that engine comes under in the emissions test.

There was plenty of cars that came out on a j without cats so i can't see you having a prob, i had no probs with my sierra on a k with a cossie lump in it and no cats. but as said get proof of engine age if you can just in case.
no because the engine is different than what is on the logbook.. could i not just take the engine number and write to dvla asking for year of make?? this would solve the problem.. if the MOT tester goes by the age of the engine then he has to test the emissions on a car of that year surely?? so if its a 1990 then it don't need a cat
no bother, just recently passed my mot course the other month and this was one of the questions i asked about. he even said just a written letter saying what age the engine is would be fine i was amazed at that. you basically have to take the owners word for it..bb
