will depend what you want the manifold to do i think

its quite a complicated science getting a manifold / exhaust to achieve what your building it for

both the ava ones were different bore sizes, both built for different reasons

Yeah Gus has a good point, larger diameter will mean greater maximum flow but lower gas velocity (may cause a bit of lag), and the opposite for a smaller diameter, would need to know whats best for your spec etc..

ive built many different types of manifolds , mostly over the gearbox type . i use 1" 1/2 pipe on long headers and any thing upto 1"5/8 for high powered car running short hearders as karlos g says its about velocity and ive got provern manifolds at well over 500+bhp with unequal lenght headers (which are not the best) and a cone style collector pot using 1" 1/2 pipe . now ive moved the game upto the next level with the use of race merge collectors which are the ultimate in terms of flow design. the only limiting factor of fitting a 4-1 merge collector is room in the engine bay.
heres a few of mine and on some well known cars.

old style manifold , unequal lenght headers and cone design made 522bhp

next stage equal lenght headers but still with cone design collector

another one i built

next was equal lenght headers with the race 4-1 merge collector
and a very well known passionford engine bay "luca"

another one

and another one that did well at central day fitted to a white mk6 fiesta zetec turbo

cheers paul

Why haven't you finished your collector at the turbo flange?

gus-whats the benifits of having a manifold of your design? more torque? or did you just want to move the turbo?

That would move the RPM range at which peak flow would be achieved (probably to outside of the RPM range).

yes your manifold went to 330bhp on alixs st turbo. alll tho it dident fit at first so he had it modified but it keeps snaping/cracking and he has got the arse with the people who modified the manifold. so i ended up removing it and i rewelding it as best as i can i made up a brace/hanger to hold it in place and it seems to be doing ok so far. but i think he will be sending it back to you at some stage so you can make it look good agine lol

Gus....I chucked one of those round the back AVA manifolds I had in the bin, I didn't think anyone would want it cos it was too 'different' haha....woops!

I've got the last brand new AVA manifold lying under my bed, it just needs pipes welded to flange (CVH or Zetec) which I can get done nae bother, dont know what to do with it tho

the first manifold is the one I have atm, AVA were selling them new for Ł800 iirc (only 5 or 6 made I think)

the one he's got currently, with the turbo round the back is the one I chucked in the bin!

yeh i know as he changed his mind lol with turbo size , external wastegates etc , plus nobody that i know has fitted a silvertop turbo in a mk6 bay so we had no idea on room , space etc it was all done with alex measurements and pictures . all the manifolds are built identical to the end of the collector and if i was honest i knew we was gonna have trouble and i did offer to send the pipes off so he could finish them himself like luca did . he also spoke to me about the bits he had modified and he said they made a right cock up of the welding and funny enough spoke to him tonight and he said that he might send it back , so when hes ready tell him to get it sent back and i will get it sorted. he also wanted ians number ,big valve head by any chance? the car went very well and i hear that the credit goes to you so well done , 12.8 on road tyres wasnt it.

cheers paul

In regards to the stock CVH rs turbo manifold i've always heard or read on here that they are good for 300bhp?

But why don't people change or develop a new manifold to run for example like a twin scross turbo does... Where 1-4 and 2-3 (equal length) cylinders are connected with two exit holes for the exhaust gas to aid in scavenging and a quicker spool up time. Think i noticed in one of you guys pics. But would the exhaust housing of a T3 also need changing to suit?

Surely the standard manifold can always be improved even at lower levels of tuning say 200bhp?

yea its a blacktop zetec turbo. he bort a silvertop that ended up getting thrown in the bin lol. and yes your right big valve head he wants 400+ hp but his injectors/fuel pump are finding there limit at the moment. and yes i built the engine for him. i have built a few engines for people on hear paul's (hes got one of your manifolds) zetec turbo simons zetec turbo my own zetec turbo. i will be starting off on my own when the time is right so just trying to get my name around a little bit at the moment lol

Can you elaborate? What theory are you basing that on?

Twin scroll, not scross. And yes, it's a worth while mod but you do need a turbine housing to suit. They aren't nearly as common. I was going to run a twin scroll, but i'm running an external gate now, and you need two wastegates for them to work with twin scroll unfortunatley.
