Have you set up the throttle position sensor (if it has one)?
Have you set the idle with the Idle valve unplugged?
Have you reset the ECU?

.

as far as i'm aware you cant manually set anything on these engines as its all controlled by the ecu.

hawkeye, definately replace that vacuum hose as they collapse and cause a high idle. that hose is actually part of the crank case breather system and if you trace it forward you get to a 90 degree corner that goes onto the pcv valve located on top of the oil seperator on the front of the block. its worth replacing this valve (think Ł12 from ford) aswell as it can cause a high eratic idle too.

i replaced those and the idle control valve on my 1.6 mk6 escort when i had it and she ran like a dream after that. might be worth an ecu reset and a service too depending on when it was last serviced.

When i had this issue with my GTi a few years ago it turned out to be the throttle position sensor, it was as good as new after replacing it

Could be a inlet manifold gasket failed or even inlet manifold cracked. Have a squirt around the gasket area with easy start and see if the rpm's fluctuate at all.
