i recall seeing a 4x4 escort a few years ago at bromley pagent and the engine was a transverse one? cvh turbo but has the rs1600i rocker, but could'nt tell ya if it was factory fit or not looked weird though
Thats very cool, if they ever did make a 4x4 rst they were fools not to produce it!
My dad has a prototype xr4x4 which has a few cool bits ford should have followed through with too!
Rob,

Rob,
IIRC there was only one built by Ford to justify the case for building the Escort Cosworth.
It's not strictly factory - it started life as a normal S2 Turbo shell and they grafted it onto a 4x4 Sierra floor pan. Just like one you could build in your shed...

aparently they did consider the 4x4 escorts, thats why they all have independent rear suspension, dont quote me on that but think it was mentioned in the old post about this, i also know where there use to be 2 of these 4x4 shells sitting in a yard, bloke use to do work for ford and mg rover, alsways had some fruity stuff in there.
Yeah they made 500 mk6 4x4 don't know how many mk5a were made but I think they really sweet, I'd love one as they look shit hot, but as far as I know the engine weren't up to much and the transfer box weren't great either. But a mk5 front and mk6 back end looks well nice to me.

they made 500 rs2000 4x4's in total which consists of both mk5a and mk6
ive recently sold my mk6 4x4
Thats a myth, - if you search Ford's parts database you can come up with loads more than 500 cars for starters, and thats just in the UK. If you count those sold in other territories the figure is much higher. Getting figures from the DVLA is also not as simple as it sounds as you have to ask them to search for all possible permutations of Escort RS2000 4x4, and one 4x4 I've seen didn't even have 4x4 mentioned on the log book. Finally - the 4x4 Escort was not a limited edition and it would have been truly remarkable if they just happened to sell exactly 500 over three years. They sold all 500 RS500 Sierras in next to no time. If RS2000 Escorts were selling at less than 200/year then Ford's bean counters would have axed them like a shot.
Ford did also made a Mk5a/Mk6 1600 Zetec 4x4 which was sold in Scandanavia and other areas of Europe prone to ice. Check the capacities and fluids section in the back of your handbook and you'll find it listed. This could be one of the reasons why the 4x4 drive train is so weak - if was originally designed to work with a 1.6...
You'll never find any evidence to say there are only 500. Its a myth that's normally dug up everytime someone tries to sell one. The same rumour has been said about RS1800 Fiestas as well.
Its a fact that Microcat has reg details of a lot more than 500 4x4 Escorts. That totally proves there are more than 500 as they are hardly going to make up reg numbers.
