Default BMW 320d M sport

Looking at one of these tomorrow, it's on an 04. Now what I've read these suffer from turbo problems, but it was only on the pre 2003?

Apart from that are they fairly reliable?

i just fixed mine, 53 plate, same model, as far as i know they all have the swirl flap problem that leads to destroying the turbo right up until the new shape on an 06???

heres the thread that deals with mine.

As soon as you buy yours take the swirl flaps out and replace them with blanks, will give you so much more peice of mind.

Pre filter? You mean the PCV Crank Case breather filter? If so, the old cottom type must be replaced at every inspection (as you say, never gets done) and this blocks and causes crankcase pressure and eventually turbo failure. However, BMW have re-designed the little filter and made a new one that is lifetime service free and works on a vortex type system that uses airflow to seperate the oil in the breather system instead of the cotton filter - Only about Ł35 and well worth changing!

newer ones had a re-designed all plastic swirl flap so if it breaks up it won't damage the engine Dave

if you can go for A 330D, I just brought a 330 and was going to buy 320d, i now know it would have been a mistake

I only had the 33od for days and it already felt slow, I got it remapped and its a lot quicker but even i still think it could do with more, its running 245bhp & 401ft lb

Dont get me wrong there great cars and fantstaic for what i do, (40K + a year), and do return between 39mpg & 55mpg depending on the mood

I recently bought my 2004 320cd M Sport. Its a lovely car, can't fault it.

Turbos are better on the '04s due to them being an uprated design (with electrical wastegate actuator). So it was really only upto 53 you need to worry about turbos. However change the crankcase breather to a vortex one just incase .

Also, delete the swirl flaps, these are the only other major issue with the engine, blanks can be bought for Ł6/ea (you need four) and about 3hrs to remove the swirl flaps, fit the blanks, replace the breather and clean the EGR valve
