...until I'm posting about issues with my RST. Ahh well its been a good few months of problem free driving.

Anyways, Just on my way home when my engine started to sound like it was empty of oil for about 1/4 of a mile. Proper nasty rattle. Like the lifters where dry or something. Stopped and check the dip stick and it was dry as a bone after just topping it up last week. :s However, after leaving the car for a bit and checking the oil again it was halfway between max and min?!

Been thinking about getting a better oil breather as i've been told it would help when running more power than std. which I should think will help oil consumption through breathing.

However, what do people think might have caused that nasty dry moment? It's got me well miffed?!?!?

Did the oil light come on, or do you have a oil pressure gauge? When you check the oil level the car has to have been standing for at least 10mins or it will not show anything, because it's all round th engine! lol
When was the bottom end last rebuilt, what cam do you have and how old is that?

ahh Karlos, was waiting for your reply

nah no light. I was waiting for it. So i assume pressure was alright.

yeah I left it for a few minutes to stand minutes before I checked the oil and nothing, then about another 10 minutes it started showing signs. Unless it was just taking it time to drain into the sump.

Bottom end has done about 8000 miles. Cam was new with the engine rebuild. What are you thinking cam wise? I assume something to do with lifters?

TBH if the pressure light on the dash comes on then the damage is already done. Sounds like you might have a blockage in the oil pickup pipe or something. Take the sump off and have a look.

If there was plenty of oil there after 10mins I wouldnt worry about it being low the first time.
There are usually only two things that make a tapping/knocking noise and thats the cam/lifters or the big ends... if it's the big ends then most of the time your oil pressure light will be on at idle (but not always), and for it to be the cam/lifters they either have to be really really worn (because they are hydraulic they will self adjust so accomodate wear and not tap) or have no oil getting to them.
Checking the oil pick up is a good idea, were you cornering hard or anything at the time and do you have a RST baffled sump?

Yeah I've had the joys of that oil pressure light before. I need to get a nes gasket on the sump at some point anyway, so i'll have a look when i'm doing that.

I was cornering quite hard at the time. On some twisties that lead to my village. As for the sump, not sure. It was bought new, however I think its a pattern part.

Ah... sounds like oil starvation then to me! If it's not a RST sump it wont be baffled and even if it is they are not that good, cornering hard will send the oil all to one side of the sump away from the pic up!

Thats sounds plausible to me! lol. Just I wounder how its never happened before now. I've had the things 3 years and it has taken some proper beatings before. (same roads).

I'm going out in a bit, i'll see what it does then.

Might be a combination of things, blocked pick up, low oil level, hard cornering, weak oil pump...... or it could have sweet fuck all to do with any of those!!! lmao!
