No car needs a cat to pass an MOT

All they need to do is pass the relevant emmisions test

After sept 1992 iirc all uk petrol cars had to be fitted with a cat. Doesn't mean it needs one though, but it does have to pass the 'cat standard'.

Although you don't technically need a cat to pass an MOT, if you are pulled in by VOSA for one of their roadside stops, they will do you if you've removed the cat! Happened to a friend of mine. Not worth the bother IMO.

Don't think that's possible???
How you they prove you removed it if you haven't had the car from new?
If the physical presence of a cat is not checked at an MOT then how would it stand up in court? It's perfectly possible for the car to pass it's emissions test without a cat installed.

I don't know mate to be honest.

Probably the same way that an old car of mine passed the MOT with tinted windows, yet I got pulled in for a VOSA check and got done for it.

I'm sure its 1st August 1992, mine is a greentop and I've fallen foul of this a few times so I'm changing back to closed loop to help things out in that dept.

I do 0.97% CO, 137PPM, on GREYS/T34, with very close on 190,000 miles on bottom end, NO CAT in sight,
NO CLOSED LOOP in sight, but then it is mapped correctly.

So you would fail the catalyst test. How is that of interest to this topic?

Legal limit for a cat-test is 0.3% CO.

worst case rebuild it with a pre 1992 block and use the engine age to get round emissions regulations not the cheapest method though
