rear beams

i know 2wd as a 7half inch diff an 4wd as 7inch diff but how do you tell the difference? where do you measure to find out? can anyone help me ?

on a 4x4 the gap between the bolt holes for the diff is 7 inch wide
on a 2wd the gap is 71/2 inch wide
