Default Xr3i mk4 really fast idle, like 4000rpm

Hi guys. I have just changed the head gasket on my 1.6 cvh and turned the key for the first time the other day and it idles at 3500-4000rpm! Obviously this is not normal. Checked all the hoses and are fine. Any other ideas to try?
Any help appreciated.

Timing is the same as when I took off the head but didn't change the belt.

Ah well, I didn't put the thottle gasket back on because it was ripped and didn't have a new one. Wouldn't have thought that it would let that much air in though.

it most certainly will mate get a new one on and you will be sorted, also put a new cambelt on you should NEVER re use a timing belt no matter how new it is as it WILL snap

I did take the inlet off and put a new gasket on it but not on the throtle. That wouldn't let enough air in to make it idle at 4000rmp

makes no difference whether its efi or mfi mate having no gasket on the throttle will cause it to suck in massive amounts of air regardless you dont need a big gap for lots of air to get through

You'd be amazed how little air is needed for idling on no load.

You have answered your own question this without doubt is whats causing the problem, timing will have no effect on engine speed, also as said get a timing belt and tentioner never reuse one you have taken off, not worth the risk!
