Key fob not working:-(

I have a 2000 Bora and the fob has decided to stop working leading me to think that the batteries had gone. Not the case.

Please can anyone help as I do not know where to go next?

is it a standard key fob, if it is try standing a couple of feet away and holding the button down for 10secs?

I am getting really miffed with this now as nothing I try works.
Which button do I hold down, lock or unlock?
