Default Saxo vts - cheap fun or money pit?

Has anyone actually owned one and got any advice or whether they are worth it for some cheap fun?

Speficially this one;

http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/www...01010354460036

70k on the clock with service history.

Opinions please

have a bad rep but they are a very fun car and respond well to any forms of tuning, i personally prefer the 106 gti.

I know they have a bad rep, not really bothered by that. Will take enough stick off my mates for it! 106 is just that bit smaller so im not really keen for one of them.

I know the hole thing about the crap interiors and stuff, had a 106 already, not gti.

Just more interested in the mechanical/electrical reliability.

Fishspeed I know the lad who owned that previously(not personally mind). I remember seeing him add the orange bits, first i saw orange wheels, then orange fuel cap, then orange cheque on the roof.............. and so on, i saw a pattern forming lol

He must have only owned it about 3-4months but he changes cars like his shoes.

Was Jon his name?

I had one when i was 18 and thought it was brilliant. My mate had a 106 gti so i didnt buy one of them, but it worked out well as my saxo was a wee bit quicker! haha. didn't have too many problems with it, except mine was quite low and i was quite aggresive with it and it ate driveshafts!

I had an R plate for about 2 years before my FRS and LOVED it

It was nippyish when it needed to be and held with a uk scoob losing car length ish to 100 which is ok!

I thought it was brilliant on fuel too!!

Only problem i had really was coil packs.

ALl in good cheap clean fun. Better than an over priced 106 gti!

Oh and i HATED "maxo's" before i got one!

i had a 97 vts which i tuned to 160 bhp and it was stripped out it was a wee rocket and held the road like a go cart.i hand endless amount of fun in it playing with bigger bhp cars.

only problem i had was the odd gear box but that was due to havin extra power put threw it.

iv got a full omp group n cage sittin if i dont sell it id defo consider another one for the track or back road banter

If they're well looked after they are a great fun car.
I wouldn't buy one with over 100k on the clock though, things start to go wrong just after this, rear beams seem to let go at this mileage, although they are a fairly easy repair, about 8 bolts and they drop off.

i used to work for citroen for about 4 years when most of the vts's were pretty new, the engines themselves are pretty bulletproof but do suffer badly from oil leaks from the head gasket above the alternator
everything else is poorly made tho, lowered cars will eat driveshafts and rear arm bearings front strut tops fail quite often and can seize up
the cooling fan wiring can melt which inturn knackers the heated screen wiring, heater wiring and ignition barrel although there is a quick mod that can be done to the wiring to prevent this
the power steering pumps can fail and are quite costly
the pedals are far to close together and everytime i drive one i hit all 3 pedals at once
i find the seat is too near to the middle of the car and not in a good position for the steering wheel
they are uncomfortable to live with
the gearboxes are chocolate as are the diffs
and to top it off they are french and made by cheese eating surrender monkeys

Had 2 now, first being a brand new one back in 1999 which was faultless, second one was a supercharged one which again was reliable baring the clutch going every couple of months.

Good honest cars imo. Parts are easy to find cheaply and you can get a good one for pretty cheap.

I think they're fantastic little cars. Quirky build quality to say the least though. Three of my mates, who coincidently were all brothers all had a VTR at the same time. One of them tended to go through rear axles like nothing else (had 3 in 2 years of owning it!).

They've all since moved on to other motors but I do miss them. Think I'm gonna have to get one and find out the hard way what they're like to live with

One thing I will say is check it's got all of its arch liners. Starting to come across a few now where the strut tops are rotting due to water and mud collecting in the tops of the arches.

Your points are SPOT ON, I owned a VTR for 2 years and can cetainly relate to things you've mentioned above as they all happened to me, highlighted in BOLD.

Plus side: Very quick for a 1600 8v, cetainly faster than my bonus that had a 1600cvh in .Handle really well but I wouldnt have another one

built shite but round a track a vts with a pipe and filter will keep with a civic type r all day long....hate the fooking things ,but the abuse you can chuck at them is awsome ,,, smash its head in all day at a track day and drive home with no issues ,,not many cars you can do this to for little money oh and the vtr is shite ,would not pull you out of bed

Cheers for all the replys! Going to go have a look at it. Having a look at the dimensions last night though has got me worried that it might just be too small, smaller than a corsa! I can only run one car so i need something that will take DH bikes and what not. Could stick them on a rack though.

i had one and it was FAULTLESS! owned it for 12 months tried to sell it for Ł1600 and it had all the right mods, light rims, biltein grp n suspension, closed induction etc etc!

Was a great car i ONLY sold as a was doing alot of miles so bought a A3 tdi but i often thought wat a great track car it'd be!

had to return it to std in the end as noone wanted to pay Ł1600 for a 2 owner genuine nicely modded car in th end i made 3k after selling it all!

I have to say I miss my VTS after I killed it 2 weeks ago.

Went through drive shafts for fun, had a nasty vibrate (bolt came out of engine mount) and had a sloppy gear change but the engine put up with no end of abuse and wasnt too bad on fuel at all.

picked up a vtr for my mates misses, I wanted her to have the fiesta zetec S but her mind was set.

It's ok, but a bit low on grunt, she wants the VTS next which I would think will be a better car.

I think they still look good though and better than the 106gti imo.
