Default Timing belt and water pump xr3i

Just bought an K reg xr3i 1.8 16v, It broke on the way to me, when you go to turn the engine over it seems to of lost compression and wont start, There was water every where on the floor of the tow truck and the timing belt has jump a tooth or so as its not broke but ever so slightly slack so my instant thought is the water pump has gone but not sure if im right please if any one has any ideas please let me know thanx

Also when you turn it over it thers no knocks or funny noises just sounds like loss of compression

Does sound as though could be the water pump, or a split pipe, hopefully you might be lucky and get away with no valve damage, certainly worth putting a new belt and tensioner on first to find out if compression is ok.
