Default Need Headlight Bulbs

The main headlight bulb blew on my ST170 today so a good excuse for me to get the uprated one.

But which one?

Osram Night Breaker or Philips X-Treme Power?

Or other make? If so, which one?

Cheers,

Ive got Osram Night breakers on my Focus ESP and they are brilliant.

I've not tried the ring, but use the philips extreme h4 in me gf's astra, really white on dip like HID, but normal colour on mb, my dad has osram nightbreakers in his mk1 mondy(with new plastic lenses), there is so little to choose between them, but as said the extreme do seem to have a short life, the dip colour being like 5000K hid is why I choose the extreme over the nightbreakers, which seem whiter than normal, but not as crispy.
Both bulbs are excellent though and a huge leap up from std bulbs.
On the astra I have wired it so that dip stays on on main beam, as it makes a world of difference for a simple bit of wiring.

I remember buying some years ago from Halfrauds, it was a blue/silver box, supposed to be bluey/white when the lights are on, but i remember they were no better than the standard lights, just a different shade in colour, total waste of money

I had a set of the halford bulbs with the blue ring part of the bulb, couldn't see a thing.
I had a extreme bulb blow whilst on hols in good old Scarborough, bought a cheapie bulb from a £1 shop in town, seriously could hardly tell the difference between that and the extreme, the bulb was a totally blue colour to look at but real white hid loking light with perfect pattern!!

Think thats the statement that was on the front of the box of the ones i bought years ago, but as i said, they were no brighter than the bog standard bulbs, just a slight whiter tint to it

I would still defo get the extreme, evenif they do seem to have a shorter life than others, I was shocked how well the £1 bulb did compared with my expectations, but to be fair that one was on the nearside so maybe would have seemed better anyway with closer objects to light, than the offside one(extreme) having to light the hole road on the offside as well.
Some prefer the nightbreakers from osram, but you won't go wrong with either, I just love the light colour of the extreme on dip, so so much easier on the eyes on extended night driving.
Car dependant doing the permanent dip mod works extremely well, and doesn't seem to affect the life of the bulb.
I took HID off the astra to refit the extreme, vastly better in the astra, as lights not that good to start with, had crap beam on hid, ace on extreme.

I did think about getting it from eBay but after reading some stories about fakes, I decided to go with AutobulbsDirect for peace of mind.

Just got it now, need to fit it after work.

i'v got the extreme brilliants bulbs from halfrauds and they are a world above standard bulbs, iirc they did a comparison with bulbs in a mag quite a while back and the halfrauds ones came on top, but like said this was a while ago, i'v had mates tell me how bright mine look and they light the road up alot better then standard and cos my mk2 mondy has dip and HB on whilst you have HB on they light up half the motorway

i'd say they where pretty good but havent known anyone using the phillips ones to compare with.

oh and the last set i brought from halfrauds blew in 4 months but the ones i had for my escort lasted a year and i'v still got them working just not the car as it got written off , i brought another set to replace them as i'm hoping it was just a bad batch, the main beams i fitted still haven't blown it was just the pair i fitted to the dip that blew.

The last three years in Auto Express the ranking on bulbs tests have been extreme no1 and nightbreaker no2.
Prior to using the extreme on the astra it had 130/90 bulbs, but 55watts of extreme dip was about tweice as bright as 90 watts of normal bulb dip.

maybe worth looking at the earths or wiring as a hole mate if it seems to be blowing bulbs atm, could of just been a bad batch though cos i had a pair from halfrauds do the same they blew in a matter of months i got a second set and they are fine.
