Default Focus 1.8 tdci error P0257

Hi,

Hoping some of you might be able to help with this situation.

I've got a focus 2003 1.8 tdci (100bhp) with 127,000 on the clock. It developed two problems. The first was stalling on the first occasion I dipped the clutch after starting (regardless of ambient air temperature), the second was going into limp mode at speed (usually after having changed from 4th to 3rd gear to accelerate up a hill).

I had the injectors refurbished about 6 weeks ago which solved the first problem - it no longer stalls after starting.

The second problem has become significantly less frequent. It used to go into limp mode almost every time I drove it, but since having the refurbished injectors it's probably once every 200 miles.

But another problem has now emerged. When cold the car feels as though its coughing under acceleration; more pronounced under light acceleration. It's difficult to describe, but coughing is as best as I can come up with. No coughing appears evident when idling. After about 5 miles the coughing stops and the engine runs fine until it's cold again.

I've taken it to my local independent garage and they found fault code P0257 - ' Injection Pump Metering Fuel Control "B" Range/Performance (Cam/Rotor/Injector)'. The garage reckon it COULD be the fuel regulator but have said it may not be. They cleared the car's memory and have asked me to drive around a bit more and then take it back next week which will give them a bit more information evidently.

Does anybody have any ideas of anything else this could be? I've read about re-mapping injectors on this forum? Could that be a fix? I'm doubtful as the car ran fine for about 300 miles after the injectors were refurbished before it started coughing.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. If this is going to be expensive I think I'll get rid of it as it's only worth £1700!
