Time has come for a new set of boots for the Megane. They come with Michelin Pilot Sport 2 as standard, 235/40/18. As we know, many of these modern high performance cars were designed with a particular tyre, so changing away from that can spoil the car. Alot of the Megane boys say that they are fantastic tyres and well worth the £165 odd that they currently sell for, even better infact than the new Pilot Sport 3. So, I was virtually ready to just buy the PS2's.

However, an awful lot of them seem to be wanking off over the Hankook V12 Evo. I mean, COME ON. I had Hankook down as ditch-finders, but they LOVE them, I mean they are choosing them over the PS2's and not on account of cost either.

I would go for the cheaper option, others rate them so buy 2 stick em on the front and if you don't like them you can soon change them, no doubt they will be worn out in 6k miles anyway!

I put Nankang NS2's on the front of my old A4 , they couldn't even reign in the mighty 1.6 Avant. they were changed again very quickly

I've got V12 Evo's on my Focus ST - they seem to be ok.

 

I really think I'm going to go with my first instinct, what the car rolled out of the factory with. They look cool too. LOL.

My arse will be twitching when I hand over the money though, NEVER spent that amount of money on tyres. Shouldn't complain I guess, I did get £300 off the asking price to cover the worn fronts.

 

Have a read of the reveiws on discounttiresdirect.com, I would put on the V12, oh sorry beat you to it I have already, and have two spares in the garage, be aware Hankook only make two batches a year, so can run dry, might want to get a few spare.
The review is by people that drive a lot of vettes C6, these come with Goodyear Supercar tires, everyone that has swapped to V12 has rated them better in every respect, despite ebing less than 1/2 the price, 996 owner "head and shoulders above"(Potenza SO3), 540i sport "outperform in every way the dunlop SP9000, rated way higher than PS2 also.

A mate of mine bought an 05 Trophy and it had Dunlops on it, he said they were the tyres designed for it or something??? Anyway they were utter dogshit and were replaced with Goodyear Eagle Asymmetric rubber instead and the difference between them was night and day. The Eagles transformed the car totally. Might be worth a look into those as an option too??

 

The Mich will last a lot longer.

 

if you read the tech spec on the ps2 it states "not to be used in winter or cold conditions"

as we found out when reading up on them for stus m5....sitting outside in the snow

 

Every tyre test, mostly by german magazines disagrees with you, they are consistently 1st or 2nd placed, mostly 1st in every category, look up on the net, one magazine even questioned whether a tyre test was necessary, with the V12 included, and said they already have the 1st place so just looking for the 2nd place, two certain(big major) tyre makers refused to submit tyres for testing due to the hankooks presence.

I'm treating mine to some V12's once these shitty fucking 'Sunny' tyres are worn out that the previous owner fitted on the front. The bastard things are hardly wearing though, and I've been giving them death just lately

I'd never even heard of Sunny tyres until I saw them on the car.

Like you say, a lot of Meg owners rave about V12's, so I'd rather save myself a few quid rather than buying the tyre it rolled out of the factory with if the Hankooks are just as good.

 

I remember when the Pilot Sport rubber wore out on the front of my 182 so I put some cheap ass Falkens on the front...

Night and Day.... I was lucky to see the day after the night, awful just didn't come close the only thing I would say was that the tyres were consistant and linear in the way they broke away and gave continuous feel of OH SHIT we're not going to make it round the corner and OH SHIT wheres the turn in and OH SHIT wheres the front end gone and OH SHIT hedge!

Christian, I think you should try the Hankooks and let me know how you get on, the PS2's on the rear of mine are nearly finished, if they are any good I will follow suit, if they are shite i'll spend the 235 quid each on the PS2's

 

Those hankooks are gettting some good reviews from the tyre tests.

i'm another one on the hankook side christian, i put them on the front of mine and the grip was unreal, i just couldn't lock the mondy up on standard brakes, i had to swap them to the back cos my tracking was way out and chewed the tyres up (didn't wan't to get it tracked till i got new arms and rod ends) it's been tracked now and had to fit some BFG's (spent way too much on car already ) and they are shit in comparison thats even with it's all running straight, really good tyre for the money, took up tabz's advice and i'm glad i did tbh, there just as good in the wet too, i used to have the back sliding out all the time when i had them on the front in the wet, will be getting some more when my next pay packet comes in .

and with regards to look's i think the hankook's look cool too

 

I was surprised to but the VENTUS RS-2 Z212 are meant to be a better tyre than the r888s so are going to be my next tyre.

Thats what I thought? Seems like an odd opinion, especially for a performance car.

You've got grip levels to think about, wet and dry. Wear rates, some tyres last 5000 miles, some last 25000 miles. Sidewall structure, some tyres have significantly firmer sidewalls, which can make the car feel SO much more positive on turns, but make it harsher to drive etc etc etc.

If you think a tyre is a tyre, then do you think a car is a car and that a Yugo Zastava is as good as a Mk2 FRS?

I've found in the past that people rave about a tyre in one application....such a a wide width rear drive car then the tyre doesnt necessarily work well in a smaller size or a fwd application etc.

If theres loads of folk recommending these cheaper tyres then assess whether you value their opinion first.......do any of them have the first clue about handling etc? If they seem sound people then give the tyres a go on the front, if they shit you can always save them for a rear pair and get the 'proper' ones on the front.

You may find the performance of the cheapo's is up there, but the economy and road noise isnt......

 

Eco friendly tyres are borderline suicidal in my experience. Coming round a mild bend in the wet at 15 and we nearly ended up facing the wrong way. We did a burnout which lasted about 15 minutes and there was no rubber on the floor, and the tires were no more worn. I remember telling my friend I was going to take said round-about at 25mph in the wet and he said 'No, don't!. I did and very nearly crashed. So I tyre is deffo' not a tyre. I'd like to say the fact that they wouldn't wear down at all, what-so-ever was a good thing, but I wanted rid of them.

I found that people are extremely susceptible and will support whatever tyre they bought themselves. People hate to admit that they've bought something shitty.

And those common "forum opinions" are mostly just bullshit, too. How can all those people really give a qualified opinion on a tyre? You have to drive several sets of tyres on the same car in wet and dry conditions for a long period of time. Yet still there's people who'll say that the Durex Watersports 69 is the best tyre for their car, even though that's the only set they've ever tried!

I would only trust professional reviews and even those I'd treat with great care. Preferably compare tests of different mags and from different countries.

i used to have falken tyres on my wheels. Then i got 2 cheap tyres which were new from where i used to work then i bought 2 more cheap tyres.i dont drive round like an idiot anyway.

you could conceivably spend £400 on a set of tyres that will last you a year or spend £660 on a set that will last you a few months while it's hot and sunny and dry

 

i've had a set of falkens on the sierra, excellent dry grip, excellent sidewall stiffness, excellent wear, they just turn to shit in the wet, but as a dry use tyre, they were fine for everyday use

not as grippy as the pirelli p6 series i used before for a few years though, but lasted twice as long

 

Dojj thats cobblers - Good Road tyres do not only last a few thousand miles and do not only work in the dry!

I have a set of Potenza's on the front of the Mondeo Diesel Estate( a heavy car at over 2 metric tonnes )......not cheap, they've done 13k and are hardly worn, the Goodyears on the back have done more and also are hardly worn! they are both reconed to be amongst the best performing tyres ( especially if you listen to the mongs on the internet )

My rear tyres on my old fiesta were still above 5mm after 64k!!!!!!
