Default Aftermarket ECU on N/A?!

Hi,

After speaking to a few people and companies, it seem that the std ecu on the focus (iv got a 1.8 mk1) is quite hard to map and if it is there is limited gains.

People have suggested a custom map or piggyback ecu, and these seem be around £400/500. Do these give any gains?

If not is it worth upgrading to aftermarket ECU, so the fueling and cam timing etc can be fully adjusted? I no these are norm around £900/£1k supplied/fitted/mapped.

Again wot gains wud be got and is it worth it on a n/a car (with exhaust/induction/cams etc) that isnt TC/SC/ITB's?

Or is the price that makes it not worth it?

Matt

The EEC-V PCM is quite sophisticated but its not difficult to MAP. What's difficult is accessing it as it uses a Ford/Visteon propriety protocol. Quite a few people have cracked it but keep the necessary information to themselves. The only firm who distribute an access software is DreamScience Flash.

The Ford MAP is pretty well optimised, but mainly for emissions, with good safety margins for reliability. It can be tweaked, but you won't see much more than 5% increase in torque on a N/A.

I run a 2.0l engine with ported induction, stage 3 head and cams, ST170 exhaust. The PCM has a Bluefin MAP giving about 150lbft torque. I recon there might be another 5% using a custom MAP or alternative ECU, but I don't think its worth the cost involved.

As said bhp versus cost is a no no.

Different engine, but this is my Clio before and after we fitted an Mtech V4 and mapped it, I would certainly recomend this ECU to others, although your gains may not match mine obviously:

SO much scope for further improvements in the future then too, in my case I fitted throttle bodies a couple of days later and found another 15bhp or so straight away

will check that out when i get home as cant view pics at work. Herd gud things bout the V4 ecu by Mtech. In that case i prob wont bother unless i decide to go dwn TB/SC/ITB route. Will not bother with remap as herd you get minimal gains and dont spending £300+ for few bhp.Matt
