Default bought an st170 but its got a coolant leak

Hello

just bought an st170 this afternoon. i checked it out from top to bottom. ran perfectly well and heaters and everything worked.

got about 25miles down the road and the oil temp started to climb, closely followed by the water temp.

got it pulled into the services a mile later.

water absolutley pissing out. it seems to be coming from the back drivers side of the engine. as far away from view or access. is the water pump located here?

feeling about under a wet car on a wet road i think i could feel a hose that has a metal 90 degree fitting that goes into this area, just above the plastic cover. the fitting felt pretty crusty so i'm hoping its this and not a water pump or worse still a cracked block.

does anybody have any experience with this engine or problem from an st170?

They always, always leak from the thermostat housing. There's a bung in the bottom of it and the seal doesn't seal properly, so chances are it'll be leaking from there too. Just hope it hasn't pissed all the coolant out and you've done more damage

It was the oil cooler sandwhich plate on mine.

very pesky to find and expensive 2!

think it was over 200 quid for the part and ford are the only suppliers.

you can just see the pin holes on the old one.

Thats odd, surely it would leak oil from there and not coolant?

i picked a 54 plate up in feb , got it home and next day there was a puddle of coolant underneath , turns out the bung on thermostat housing was passing water
not a bad fix ,£7.00 from ford for new aluminiun bung and a new " o " ring , the new " o " is 1mm bigger in diameter than the old one
makes you wonder if ford slipped up on design , you hear so many stories about this

hi again
after further investigation i think i have found the cause of the problem.
it is just to the right of the oil filler cap and to the right hand side of the engine. it seems to be leaking from underneath, a alliminium bung of some sort.
does anybody know what this could be?
cheers

Yeah its the thermostat housing, very very common to leak from there. You can buy a new bung for a couple of quid from ford.

Pretty sure it just pulls out, cant remember though was ages ago when I did mine. Get a new plug from ford first and you'll see how it fits
