Default Off roading

Well i've sold my race car and fancy getting into off roading. I've searhed ebay and pistonheads but cant find anything suitable. Does anyone know the best places to be looking?

Also does anyone do any green laning round surry/hampshire?

Whats the budget? Will you work on it yourself? Are you keeping it road legal? What sort of Off roading are you hoping to do(laning/trialling/pay and play)?

SJ's are getting hard to find if you want a tidy one, for the cost of one with a few mods you can get an early Jimny. Same applies to Vitaras old ones are usually really rough.
Daihatsu sportraks are cracking but again hard to come by cheap.

Discoveries and old Rangies can be had for £500 but will obviously cost more than an SJ to run.

For 2k i'd look at a real tidy Disco for about 1k. Spend the other 1k on suspension and tyres and some good recovery points and recovery gear.

Or the same for a Jimny 1k for an early one a 3" suspension lift, a home made body lift of 2" and some muds and offsets. Trim all the arches and bumper corners and show the landy boys the way! Don't go too big in tyre size though as it kills the gearing as standard.

The only thing i'd say is that a Jimny will sell for more and easier as standard where a disco will be worth reasonable money in either state.
I'd get out with some of your mates and see how their trucks perform, Disco's are great value for money but the little ZUKS will never fail to put a smile on your face.
Even if you started off with a standard truck on mud terrains you become a far better driver off road. If the truck does all the work for you you'll be spoilt and won't learn to read the terrain and pick your lines. I know plenty of people who trial essentially standard SJ's,Vits,Jimny's and regularly show up better equipped trucks. I love SJ's but i'd not choose one over a Jimny. Its essentially an SJ with coils and power steering.

As said get out to your next Pay and Play and see whats working and whats not, bag a passenger ride if you can. Don't rush into buying something then regret it because it wont do what you expect or its not comfortable etc....

Any 4x4 will do what you want with good tyres TBH, as standard they will all have limitations though, it comes down to how extreme you want to go.

Thats a belting little truck. I had a 410 a few years ago and loved it! Screaming little engines, janspeed used to do a full system for them too and iirc you can bolt on a metro carb or similiar for a bit more go, tbh though the original carb properly set up should be trouble free. In the main if you have a bit of mechanical sympathy they're pretty hardy!

It could just be the pics but it looks like the springs have sagged because of the shackle lift, they tend to if its done on old/tired springs. I'd look to invest in a proper set of lift springs with some d-flex shackles for some proper flex.

Loads of places for mods out there, Rhino Rays, KAP, Off road Armoury, Bits for Vits.

You'll not get bigger bang for your buck than a disco... lift kit, some insa turbo special track tyres and a bit of trimming here and here and your laughing. Snorkels arn't cheap but I'd recommend one if your going to do pay and play days cos if the waters there you'll be in it.

The thing with landrovers is the bits are for nothing when you break it, and you will.

If you can get your mates to buy one and go as a group the fun is endless and they can rescue you when your stuck.

Whatever you decide to get, if you think you fix your ford alot... get ready.
