Default Restoration 9600HP .. ;)

Ok, if you own a ship with 2 main engines each kicking out 9600HP make sure you do the Big Ends up properly otherwise this might happen...

""

and the piston will get stuck in the liner...

""

and the block will be smashed to pieces resulting in bent push rods ..

""

oh..and a new block...that'll be 1.9 million euros please...
""

old block out

New block nearly in...
""

lowered down through hole cut in deck into engine room..
""

DONE

""

not bad for two weeks work ...think you'll aggree lol

worth noting that the RFA ( royal fleet auxiallary) dont ACTUALLY do alot of work themselves..hence why we get called in. sound bunch tho. Worse still is the RN , they are slack as hell lol big boys club.

Thats a rather large engine !

Being that the engine I guess is assembled by a few people what happened to the guy that incorrectly torqued that big end up !

How long does it take to remove and refit a engine ?

Well, they've had issues for a while with these engines because for some reason theres a washer on one end of the Big end Bolt and if its not located properly when they are done up ( 2250 BAR ) it basically rattles loose and heres the result. We've done the big ends dozens of times and always made sure this washer was in place but it seems it was one of the ships engineers that cocked up this one. As regards what happend to him , not alot i dont think. It hard to pin it on one guy ( but we think we know who it was ) and as usual it all kinda gets lost in the paperwork trail.

The old engine was out in about 2 days, that includes cutting the hole, unbolting the coupling , pipework , removing cylinder heads and other bits .
It was done in Hamburg using Blohm and Voss shipyard ( where they built the Bismark ) and the yard labour were shit hot. Literaly 14 days to get the old one out, the new one in, line it all up , bolt on the pipework and make some alterations and then weld the deck back in etc.
Good going for ZEE GERMANS

lol @ that ^^^

You make it sound so simple.

We had a discussion round mine the other night after looking through that out shipyard thread and some more current ones, what exactly do you use to tighten a bolt to 2250bar ! Some of the tools must be ridiculous !

lol its basically done using the stretch in the bolts. If you look in one of the pictures at the top of the thread you can see them lying on the pallet. Its done using hydraulic jacks that screw onto the thread at the end. the jacks are then extended ( only about 5mm) to 2250 BAR ( on a maximator air pump ) using oil and then then nuts are tightend down the thread and the pressure let off. Same for the cylinder heads and main bearing caps. The flywheel bolts and other BIG bolts are done using a torque multiplier. Sometimes it involves using a big bar and inch drive gear.
Hope this makes sense, its not easy to get your head round lol.
The REALLY big two stroke stuff uses the same principles just bigger jacks and nuts.
The jacks themselves are about the size of two bags of suger so are man handelable.
Its easy to get wrong but once you;ve done it several hundred times it gets easier .

Cool, I'll let him know, I'm like a kid in a sweet shop walking around his work looking at what I consider to be big engines, clutches etc. but then you post things like that !

Some of the stories of he roadside repairs he has been called out to are hilarious, one being a small rattle coming from the engine which turned out to be half a block missing and a rod hanging out through the side LOL

Like ship engines when those sort of things let go they do it properly ! only more expensive !

Feel free to post more pics, I love stuff like this and plenty others on here do too !

oh and PM me your email !

Im a dockside crane driver, so been on a few ships in mine time, lifted a few engine parts on to them, pistons etc, and they are rather huge...i have sometimes thought how the hell do they change the engine if it goes boom, some are stuck right under the bridge's etc, now i know just cut the boat until you can get it out

Also notice thats some crane lifting it out, dont look like much but has a S.W.L of 200ton...

Yep, they run on MFO or HFO , diesel Oil or Heavy Oil which needs to be heated first

the Heavy stuff is a cunt to work with, they shoul dnever shut the engine down on Heavy but some do.
As a link , the Chief Engineer onboard owns a Mint Escort Cos , He's in the Durham Rs Club if anyone knows him...Steve

I was referring to volume - square kilometres.
