I am not very mechanically minded but try my best so bear with me trying to explain this!

I've got a mk6 Rs2000 which is having issues.

Whilst driving it a while ago the revs suddenly went down and it was like there was no power even though the engine was still going, which is not the best of things when youre toddling round a roundabout.

Now it starts up fine then after a minute starts stuttering and the revs go up and down alot. Plus the emmisions are through the roof.

My dad being the lovely chap that he is has tried fixing it... i think hes changed most of the sensors on it and now the ECU is being looked at.


Basically what i want to know is if theres some common fault that is causing this or does anyone have any suggestions what might need replacing/fixing?

 

do you have the cat fitted?
if so check the insides havent collapsed as that would make it hold back, may pop aswell

also if the revs are rising and falling it could be the idle control valve, vry common on nearly all fords. give it a good clean

 

yeah it has one but its ok and the idle control valve ive changed already

 

Fuel pump on it's way out? Or possibly a loose connection.

 

check the coil pack wiring aswell mate,
the wiring that goes to the coil packs goes brittle due to the heat build up.

remove the sparkplug cover and wiggle both the wires that go to the coil packs.

even if they dont seem damged i bet you they are.
every single rs2k suffers from this and it causes all sorts of running issues.
very easy to replace and will improve things dramaticly.

if this wiring is faulty it will run very rich as it wont be sparking and buring the fuel properly and will cause emmissions to be high

 

im not sure if the fuel pump has been checked yet. coil packs was the first thing i changed on it... waste of Ł100 cos it wasnt them!

 

im not saying its the coil packs jess, the wiring that goes to them is very often the root cause of all running probs on the rs2k,

they break up inside.

the wiring should be replaced as a matter of due course as its a WELL known weak point on the rs2k

 

if this wiring has any breaks inside the causing it would make the car hesitate, run rough and quite often run on 2 cylinders.


every rs2k ive known suffers from this and 99% have now had it replaced.

 

this is where my non mechanical mind lets me down il have to have a look for the wires, i thought cos the coil packs had been replaced it couldnt be to do with them. how do you know if the wiring is cack? just by looking at it?

 

if you know how to use a multimeter you should check each of the coil pack plugs for a 12v feed.

if this is going abit far remove the spark plug cover start the car and wiggle the wires that go to the coil packs, try bending the wire in different places and see if it improves or makes running worse, if it does either it needs replacing.
you can also cut away the black insulation on the wires near to the plug, the wires inside will most likely be brittle and the inner casing cracked.

Does it have asuperchip plug in module in the ECU?

Have you tried cleaning the big wiring loom multiplug connectors at the back of the engine bay?

 

turns out the ecu is fooked im hoping its not expensive to get a new one

 

no more than Ł50 for another one,

its not been tested for emmissions again yet, im waiting on a fuel regulator to arrive in the post because it needed a new one of those too will be going to the garage next week to see if itll pass emmissions test once thats fitted before i put it through a full mot
