That seems mental? I understand the 'strict liability' issue but surely basic common sense should come into it.

and todays lesson is if you see something you shouldnt then walk on by in case you get fucked for it. no wonder the place is so fucked up.
id have taken it, shot some people who need sorting then sold it on to other criminals.
if theres no defence he's guaranteed time as a minimum sentence applies to firearms.

Totally - like the guy who went back to help a car that crashed behind him. Despite saving someones life he got a big stretch because two people died and he was accused of racing!!

These things are done like this to give joe public confidence in the police nanny state!!
I've found on lots of occasions 5.56 rounds from SA80's on a certain road, the first time I asked plod what I should do with it(a live blank this time) to which they said "we have no procedure to deal with this", good old norfolk plod for you.
Any I find now I just give to my mate, and he gets rid of for me.
I pick them up as are still dangerous even live blanks, 6-8 I've found now.

What a load of shit for being convicted of possession of as firearm.Fairdo if he was caught doing something with it but not this.In the past I have handed in live rifle ammunition and live shotgun cartridges that I found in my garage, all they did was ask why I had it and took my name.
On a note of an SA80 one of my mates lost his head and went awol from the army with a loaded one.He did get a jail term and the firearm was never recovered I don't think he planned it or anything, just lost the plot
Gota feel for this guy though being honest like

Sorry but .......

How the fuck did he get to the police station... ???

More so, he pitches up with the gun while sitting in front of the officer.

Surely the common sense approach is to ring 999 or if you dont consider it an emergency the local plod who would more than likely send an Armed Response Vehicle.

Leave it at the bottom of the garden but keep an eye on it to make sure no one comes back for it, or at the least move it somewhere safer.

Taking it down to see the local super is frankly bonkers.

how did he manage to phone up the top man and get an appointment anyway? try that at your local plod station. was it an instant appointment or did he have the gun for a while until he did get to see him?it does sound like he took the melodramatic route.

He wont get five years.

Five years is the maximum for possession ( irmc )

Askley walters from 'SO SOLID CREW' (enit bruv) only got 18months for actually carrying a gun in public

He'll get jail because he took a few days to decide what to do with it and didn't phone 999 immediately.

he was an experienced soldier that has used weapons and will be able to handle, why wouldnt he pick it up! He had taken it into his house when it was still wrapped up. He then took it to the cops. My god! Shock horror. Someone actually got of their arse instaed of wwaiting for the useless cops to come round and collect it. I would have done the same thing. (i have a firearms cert and wouldnt like it on my property for any longer than it needed to be incase i got accused of owning it)

This place is fkn getting on my tits. Cant do anything nowadays

if you found a gun youd either take it straight around to the piggery or phone them on your mobile.

still regardless its pretty rediculous for it to even get to trial.

Especially when you consider the CPS drop much more serious cases, despite evidence, on grounds of "not in publics interest". So why wasnt this done here??

So the little piggys encourage us citizens to report crime etc and then they do stupid stuff like this????

By doing that he has taken possession of it, that's the offence and as an ex Soldier he should know that.

Destroying / interfering with evidence.

I thought I heard a police man on the radio say he will not be locked up as it will stop anyone in this situation handing in a weapon again.

I think you will find nowhere in any UK armed forces basic training (or further training) do they specifically cover "finding a non-military firearm".

in fact it is part of EVERY weapons handling test that you find an unattended weapon and demonstrate making it safe.

Its still rediculous. Imagine you encounter an armed robbery, you disarm the robber.

By not immediately dropping the gun (once the need for self defence has passed), then by that law you are in "possession" of the gun and committing a crime!!

how fucking rediculous.

Even more stupid when you consider most police forces regularly run gun amnesties allowing you to walk into the cop shop with a gun and hand it in no action taken.

if they can make that allowance for what will often be serious criminals under the guise of an amnesty then why the hell cant they do the same for this guy????

Do they want to alienate the public even more??? or has it got to the stage now where they just dont care???

You really dont have a clue mate, the first thing you would do is pick up the bag to see whats in it, so thats me destroying evidence??? come on!

Taken possension???ex soldier.... are you serious!

Cops come right round, possibly....in fact your right but i really doubt i would want them round my house with the armed response unit. i would get it safe as soon as i found it, that would be away from the garden and my kids and away from my house.

I should know better! How dare you. You dont know a thing about me and i doubt you have any experience with firearms at all, if you do you really dont sound like it. Fair enough you are entilteld to your opinion but you sound like your out your depth here pal.

And the Police wonder why the public have no trust or respect in them anymore? ... He should have been given a commendation for taking action to prevent gun crime ..

I can see the reasoning of leave it where it is, let SOCO try for prints etc, but would YOU leave a live weapon lying about? I don't think so, I am a trained firearms handler, and to just leave it there would be utter madness.

Well done Surrey Police, you have yet again punished the man trying to do the right thing... And the fucking CPS and courts need a good look at themselves as well.

id bet good money that no matter where you live if you phoned 999 saying youd found a gun the police would be around mob handed as quick as they could possibly drive. its not exactly a kitten stuck up a tree.

So you would rarther just leave it lying there for the coppers to not bother turning up? .. With all due respect, have you any idea how well trained British soldiers are? Without doubt I would rarther have him picking it up and making it safe than the vast majority of the fuckwits who have seen fit to charge him for this offence, it is not like he was walking down the street waving it around now is it? .. Sure you are not a copper?

Yes mate, i have a firearms cert, i have handled firearms in some way or another for 25yrs, i am comfortable around them so yes i would move the "illegal" firearm that would now be in my house! I wouldnt carry it down the street you muppet, it would be made safe, go in a suitable container and be driven to the cops.....

As i said before you really dont have a clue......."carrying a firearm in the street"!!!!! nobody with firearms would do such a thing unless they didnt want to keep their cert and most of us do. Its people like you that cause hype about such things, create bad press and stigma that firearms are bad. Most firearms users are extremely sensible people, its pretty hard nowadays to get your licence for obvious reasons.

Get off yer high horse.

I read the story the other day and it seems he held on to the gun for a number of days before handing it into the police - it also said that you don't take guns to the police station, so where do you take them then

The moral of the story is fucking leave it where it is for someone to pickup and then use on somebody - good old justice system
